To those of you who don't know that "Throttling" is or how Netflix does it, I'm here to explain it to you in as clear terms as possible. I have had Netflix for about 4 months, and at the end of each month for whatever reason, it took 7-10 days for me to receive my next DVD. So I decided to scour the internet to see if anyone else was having the same problems and discovered that many people are, and it's this thing that Netflix does to renters that is called "Throttling"...

Basically, Netflix has to make at least $2 per DVD that you rent, so if you're on a 2-DVD Unlimited Plan (like I am), if you rent 7 or 8 DVDs per month, the total cost for you per DVD is less than $2, so Netflix says, "Hey we're not making much money on this person, so let's slow shipping speeds or delay DVDs sent the them..." So at the beginning of the month your DVDs may come in the mail a day or two later after you return them. However, once you hit that threshold (which is 6 for me) they'll find a way to delay shipping on your next DVD. How do they do this?

Well there's two ways that they can do this: 1. Act like you returned your DVD late and not ship out the next one for days or 2. Ship your DVD from a center that is far away from where you live (for ex. I live in Alaska, so when I hit my threshold of 6, they probably start shipping my DVDs from Miami, Florida). This month, Netflix claimed to ship my DVD on January 22nd, well it's the 30th and it still isn't here. How could a DVD shipped from the nearest shipping facility suddenly take 10 days to get here? When before, I could mail it out on Monday and have it arrive here by Thursday...interesting...

So Netflix blatantly lies that the offer "Unlimited DVDs Per Month"...It's not unlimited at all, if it was unlimited I should be able to get at least 10/month on a 2 DVD plan, but if I go and try to get over 6, it's an issue and they throttle my account. I'm threw with Netflix and their lies, I'm trying Blockbuster now because the CEO has even come out and said they don't throttle accounts like Netflix does. Netflix is GREAT!

AUTHOR: smcasey - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 02, 2011

I have been a Netflix user since it started and I have had absolutely no problems with recieving my videos in a timely manner. If I mail my return video on monday, they will recieve it on tuesday, mail out my other video in my line up on tuesday, and by wednesday I have a new video. I think because the person complaining lives in Alaska and has ALOT of bad weather, ie snow, maybe that is the reason their videos are coming in slow. I have alot of friends who are Netflix members and they have no complaints. Seems to me this person or persons in Alaska are trying hard to make netflix out to be a bad company. Maybe they should move to the mainland or start their own online video business but keep to Alaska!!!

Excellent service

I have had a Netflix subscription since 2004 and have had 1 incident when I didn't receive my DVDs in just a couple days. Usually 2 days and occasionally 3. The time that failed was because they got the DVD late for some reason. They ALWAYS come from the same place (about 120 miles from us).

Plus now we can watch an unlimited number of movies with Roku. An awesome service.

I don't know what your problem is but I believe their service is exemplary and I recommend them to everyone.

I have this plan and have never had a problem receiving my dvds.Where are your dvds shipped from? You state Florida - what does the return address state?Mine are shipped from close range therefore I received them within 1-2 days.

I do not know about your logic but I do now I have had this plan for 3+ years with no problem.

Netflix is a bargain.

Two dollars to view a dvd is pretty cheap. You pay a flat rate each month. You also have unlimited access to streaming videos from their site at no extra cost.

I recently watched every episode of a ten season t.v. show in two months. The cost to me was approximately sixteen dollars total for the two months. How much would that have cost me at a video store? Lets do the math.

Ten season of a show at six discs per season is sixty discs. My local video store charges two dollars fifty cents a disc per five days of rental. Since I can watch the four episodes on the disc in one day, the five days is pointless. I still need to return and rent a new disc each day. Four episodes a day equals one disc a day for sixty days, which is two months. So, the lowest I would pay my local video store to watch the same show would be one hundred fifty dollars.

I paid Netflix sixteen dollars. Looks to me like I saved one hundred thirty four dollars and sixty trips to the video store.

Even watching the same show on your plan, two dollars a disc, would have saved me thirty dollars. Thirty dollars is worth the 'hassle' of so called throttling, I would say. One hundred thirty four dollars off is a bargain you aren't likely to find on other services these days.
