I answered an online ad for a work at home job. I sent in a resume and answered interview questions. I was notified that I got the job and was asked to send in my available hours to work.

I was then sent a check in the mail and received e-mail instructions to cash the check, buy particular software, keep a portion for a bonus, and wire the remainder through Western Union to a particular address.

I was not suspicious until I got the check. I took it to the bank it was drawn on and was told that it looked fraudulous. I was later informed that the account was closed and there had been previous fraudulent checks drawn on the account.

The check was accompanied by a note signed by a different person and a different e-mail address than the original correspondence. Then I got e-mails supposedly related to my "employment", but from different e-mail addresses.

One e-mail stated not to respond to a previous address as the company had their data base stolen. To prove they were legitimate, they listed my information that I had provided on my interview.

Thank goodness I was smart enough not to deposit the check into my personal account, follow the instructions and then have the check bounce and my account out the money.

Almost scammed!
