I purchase a nextel phone in march of 2006. I have had trouble with the battery staying charged ever since. this is the email that i send to several customer service people after not being able to get help locally.

I purchased the I836 and a two year plan on 3/21/2006. The battery will not hold a charge for even a day and it has gotten worse of the last couple of months. I was traveling out of town and I had to stop and buy a car charger because the phone died after being charged all night.

I went to several stores and they tell me stuff like . You aren't charging it right you have to turn the phone off and charge it, which makes no sense and they ask me if I am sure that I have the connect plugged in all the way, like I am total moron. But I have been dealing with this since I got the phone.

I go to one store where I got the phone/ They act like I have leprosy, tell me they can't help me there and they tell me I have to go to the service center across town. I get there and I am told that I have to call a 1-800 number for motorola.

Motorola informs me that the phone I just got march 21, 2006 has a battery and that the warranty on that battery expired may 2006. And I will have to wait for a tag to send the battery to motorola and then I have to wait at least 14 days from when they receive the battery for them to send a battery to replace that one, and I have to show them proof that I purchased it when I did. So that means that I will be without a phone for probably a good month, or spend outta pocket money for a new battery that should have been put in my phone in the first place. NO ONE should have to go to all this trouble just to use one of your products.

Customer service should be ongoing once a purchase has been made, but I have found that it is almost an as is sale.

Needless to say, I am a very unsatisfied customer. What I would like to do is terminate my contract without being penalized with the cost to cancel it.

I would appreciate a response and a resolution to this problem..

Needless to say I have not receive any type of response at all. Not even sorry you are outta luck or anything.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Nicads and memory characteristic

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

yes indeed, nicad batteries do have what we call a "memory characteristic" whereas the battery will behave as though it's discharged when it's not. This "memory" may be cleared by performing 3 or more "deep cycle" recharges - that is the battery is charged at the normal rate (no quick charge) and fully discharged under normal operating load - this cycle is repeated 3 times.

However, the newer cell phones use lithium ion batteries. The "memory characteristic" of these batteries is so small that it's considered non existant. If the battery is a lithium ion, it's very possible that it is defective.

A note about both types of batteries. Both types of batteries do have a limited "life cycle" - how many times they can be recharged. Further, both types are damaged by HEAT - this is why "quick charging" is not recommended - always use the battery and charger recommended by the OEM. Also, the battery should not be exposed to excessive temperatures for long periods - don't leave it in your car during the summer or winter -extreme temperature variations will reduce battery life.

How to charge your battery

AUTHOR: Rebecca - (U.S.A.)

I used to sell Nextel phones. I think you misunderstood what you were told with regard to charging your phone. When you received your phone you were supposed to run the battery down until it died, leave it off while it charged fully without turning the phone on, or un-plugging it in anyway from the charger. That puts a good memory on the battery and you won't have the problem of it dieing after only a few hours of use. Otherwise you don't have to turn the phone off to charge it, neither do you have to let it run down all the way again, unless you just want to. Also be aware that with the smaller phones the batteries are smaller and will not hold a charge like the 'big' phones. The i730 has twice the battery life that the i830 has, the i305 has twice the battery life of the i730. its just a matter of battery size

Also there are shops that do seed swaps for the phones, and I believe the batteries as well you just have to call around and ask. Now having said that if it is past time for the warranty that won't do any good at this point, just something to remember next time.
