I needed a pack of Rolodex refills, but the nearest Staples store, which I preferred, was too far (I don't drive), so I went to Office Max in the Irvine Marketplace. I had looked up the price online at Staples for the refills, and they only wanted $1.49; I thought, well, I've been in an Office Max once before, and the staff didn't seem to know their stuff. That had been several years ago, and I hoped things had improved. I hunted all over the store for the one item I needed; signage was not very helpful, and the sales staff was congregated in the front of the store, presumably to make a good impression by saying hi to people coming in. I finally found what I wanted, but nearly had a heart attack over the price--$3.99! With sales tax, that boosted it to $4.30--nearly three times what Staples charged! I saw on the reciept there was a survey site that was supposed to allow me to rate my shopping experience. I got home, and as soon as possible, went to the survey site--unfortunately I tossed the reciept, and the garbage has been taken out, but I believe it was www.officemax.com/survey . But to my surprise, it turned out to be a site like what you see when you put in an address, and it turns out the domain name's been sold. It led to a list of survey sites, listed by companies, but Office Max was nowhere to be found on the list. I'm checking my browsing history, and if I find it I'll add it. Worst of all was a fake forum that tooted its own horn, and was so bogus I just went to the contact us link and let them know what I thought. Probably didn't get to the right person, but there still is no reason for them to rip people off like that, and then pretend to care about their shopping experience by giving them a fake survey site and a bogus forum. Never again!

The opulent life

AUTHOR: Mike Oxlong - (U.S.A.)

If you are flat broke, why are you spending money on luxury items like Rolodex refills?

On the receipt..

AUTHOR: Brent - (U.S.A.)

The exact website that is printed on the Office Max receipt is:

www.officemax.com/store/survey

This takes you directly to the survey. You probably accidentally typed in the website wrong. When you go to the survey site, it will show a copy of an Office Max receipt. The website you are speaking of is a scam website that generates links by purchasing domains that people commonly accidentally type in when trying to go to a legitimate website.

Still....

AUTHOR: Ihateks - (U.S.A.)

Let me explain my situation, please. I don't drive, use buses, and I'm not going to use a prepaid daypass just to get one item. I would love to order online--I've done that previously, and it's great. Problem is, I'm unemployed, flat broke, and when you're over a certain age, it's next to impossible to get a job. I keep trying, though. But I still feel it was excessive, and the employees should be more proactive in helping customers instead of hanging around up front. I have gone into an Office Max once before, and the employees didn't seem to know their stuff.

Obviously not very well trained, or they pick losers to hire. I'm old enough to remember when you went into a store, you got real service. Now they think people should help themselves, and figure things out on their own, to "save money". As far as I'm concerned, the only ones who are saving money are the companies, and the money they save by not hiring older, more reliable, experienced workers who know how to help a customer goes straight into the CEO's pockets. It may be cheaper to hire high schoolers who are earning money for their next party, but who don't know diddly-squat about helping people, and it shows. One of these days, this "economizing" is going to bite the companies in the rear end.

And then they'll be crying because the days when they got rich convincing people they were saving money and laughing all the way to the bank will be over. Just you wait and see. By the way, Staples has way better service. I can't understand why someone who gives better service and lower prices should have competition that has virtually no service and higher prices. I once saw where there was a Staples and an Office Max a short distance from each other; the Office Max didn't last a year. Staples is still there.

It's still a rip-off

AUTHOR: Ihateks - (U.S.A.)

There's no reason for my purchase at Office Max to cost considerably more than what it would've cost at Staples. Office Max in Irvine and the nearest Staples are less than 5 miles apart; there is no way Office Max's overhead, especially rent, could be that much higher, and with the economy the way it is in California, it's highly unlikely that Office Max employees are paid significantly more than Staples employees. If the survey was on the up and up, why didn't the address I typed into the search field, without error, take me to a scam site? I checked my search history, and the only possible site was Panda Research, which Yahoo warns is a possibly hazardous site, due to their tendency to spam. Someone less wise than myself would fall right into that, and end up getting spammed and who knows what else.
The rules in California are different here. You charge more than double for an item someone else has cheaper, it's a rip-off. There's no need for those Rolodex cards to cost $3.99 when someone else can sell them for $1.49. I stand by my assessment.

That's The Point

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

There's an office max on almost every corner and you get to pay for that convience. You said it yourself, "..the nearest staples store, which I prefer, was TOO FAR". Just like the other person bitched about the fact that walgreen charged more for his meds then sam's, but he ran out of his meds one night and sams was closed and walgreens stays open 24 hours a day and there's a walgreens on almost every corner AND they stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One thing I HAVE found is office max has really gone downhill, with many bait and switches, having only one of their ad specials in stock, if that. Stop going there years ago because of their poor business practices. IF you don't like the prices, don't shop there. You do have to consider the price of gas, if the cards are $2.50 more and you spend $10 in gas getting to staples. Many people are ordering online to save gas.

Not a ripoff or a scam

I don't see how you were ripped off at all.... and your story in no way shows a "scam".

Either way, here is a link to get a price match for the rolodex cards you bought. You will need your receipt however. Since you threw it out, you can get another copy at the same store you purchased the cards from.

Here is the link to the survey you were looking for. Google found the website in .07 seconds. Since I didn't have a receipt (which says the exact website) I had to do a search. You will also need your receipt to do this survey.

Also, feel free to call 1-877-OfficeMax to complain directly to a person about your experience.
