On Saturday May 29, 2010 at about 8pm I went to the OfficeMax store in Dearborn, Michigan to by a GPS unit.  I purchased the Garmin 1450 which was on sale.  I was given what appeared to ne an unopened box and upon paying security seals were placed on the box.  These seals read if opened a 15% restocking fee will apply.  Upon arriving home with my new GPS I looged into internet to read a few reviews of the unit.  At this point I still have not opened the box.  After reading a few reviews I discovered that the 1450 DID NOT support traffic report.  It was now 8:30pm and there was no way I was going to make it back to the dearborn store by the 9pm closing time so I decided to go to the Westland, Michigan store.  I wanted to either return of exchange the Garmin 1450 for a unit which supported traffic reports.  I was told that there were no units available which supported traffic so I requested a refund.  The store manager of the Westland store removed the security seals and opened the box.

Everything was still factory seals with the exception of the GPS unit NOT being in the box.  I had the Westland store manager immediately call the Dearborn store and report that the GPS unit was missing and i was also allowed to talk with the Dearborn store manager and I told him that I was given a box with no unit and was not happy.  The Dearborn store manager Steve apologized and told me there would be no problem and to return the unit in the morning.  I was told Steve would not be there in the morning but that he would inform the proper people.  It is now 10:30am Sunday May 30, 2010.  I showed up at 10am as instructed and was told there was nothing that could be done.  I even told them that the security seals were intact up to the point that the Westland store manager removed them and they could not care less.  I have make a police report for theft and will be looking into filing suit in small claims court.  I do not plan on letting OfficeMax rip me off got $192.00 without a fight.  Buyers beware that OfficeMax will make there problem your problem.  Do not shop at OfficeMax if you value your hard earned money.

Restrictive Return Policy

AUTHOR: DavyBaby - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, January 26, 2012

Just came from this Dearborn OfficeMax store, and had a bad experience with what should have been a simple return. Ten days ago for my birthday my wife gave me several MontBlanc pen refills which were the wrong size. I got the receipt from her and went to return them. I was told "sorry, this was purchased 39 days ago, and there are NO returns after 30 days." I explained the situation, but was told no. I asked to speak to the manager, and had to wait nearly 15 minutes. My time is valuable, and it was hardly worth it, but I waited. The manager discussed the policy, but agreed to make the return. BUT only to my wife's credit card. I didn't have my wife's credit card. "Sorry, no return." Can you refund it to another credit card? "No." After further arguing, she agreed to a store credit. Well who wants to shop here again after having to argue with salespeople for twenty minutes over some pen refills? But I took it.

The icing on the cake: on the way out of the store I noticed a sign that said, "free bottle of soda if we didn't try to sell you printer paper on this transaction." So I asked for the pop. "Sorry, that doesn't apply to returns!" More arguing. But I got the soda.

Not surprised!

I am not surprised that you are getting such a hard time with this company. I would like to see more people such as yourself continue to post such behavior not only here but on sites like Consumer Whistles .com I feel that so many times companies abuse their customers. What ever happened to the customers always right. I understand that to a point that may not be true but come on.

Mu suggestion is that you have them review cameras when you bought the gps that would help in the progress.

FINAL UPDATE

AUTHOR: Jim - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 01, 2010

I am happy to say that OfficeMax does have integrity.  The matter has been turned over to Loss Prevention and I was called this morning asking me to return to the store.  I got an apology and my money has been refunded.

Thank you OfficeMax for doing the right thing, which is rare in today's business world.
