I ordered a laptop through their website (Averatec 2370 for $599.99) the day before Thanksgiving as part of their black friday sales promotion. For a week after my order status was listed as "Shipping within 6-9 days". Then my item was placed on backorder. After calling their customer service number I was told that it would be back in stock within ten days. One day later the order was canceled. I called their customer service number again and was told that they do not have any more in stock and aren't getting any more. When a company such as Office Max offers a product like this at a greatly reduced price ($300) it is incumbent upon them to limit the orders to what they can fill. If they did not have sufficient stock to fill online orders then they should not have posted it online or pulled the item from the website when that number was reached. Office Max knew how many they had on hand. Office Max knew how many were ordered from their website. If nothing else they should have put any of the orders over the number on hand on backorder right away instead of stringing their customers along. Office Max will not get any of my future business again.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Be Realistic, Please

AUTHOR: Common Sense - (United States of America)

All Black Friday promotions are offered as "while supplies last". When orders are placed, they run against a total in-warehouse nationwide. When these supplies run out, the company tries to get more from the supplier. If they are unable to, the orders cannot be fulfilled, but that's a chance you always take with black friday promotions. As a consumer, it's irritating in the extreme, but with a situation like this, it isn't totally unexpected.

Companies prepare for major sales pushes like Black Friday and Back to School nearly a year in advance. They can estimate demand for a particular item, but supplies are always finite. This is hardly unusual, and definitely not specific to OfficeMax. To think otherwise is unrealistic.

The major flaw with the system as it existed in '06, though, is that consumers aren't notified as to WHY their order was canceled, a policy that certainly needs to be fixed.

#2 UPDATE Employee

Not a rip off or false advertising

AUTHOR: Brent - (U.S.A.)

This person was not rip-offed and this was not false advertising. The only thing that happened here was Office Max accepted an order they could not fill - a simple mistake. I am sure they apologized.... what exactly do you want?
