I have a 1986 Honda VF500F that I picked up cheap while working near Sacramento, CA . I knew the bike needed the carbs redone, I was fine with that.
I saw an auction on Ebay from a guy going by the name "oldschoolcarbs" describing his vast experience with the carbs of my bikes line (it's a V-4) and his $225 cleaning and rebuild service.
His feedback was good, so on 04 April 2011 I sent them in. On 08 April 2011 he emailed me , and said that he had received them.
In a phone communication in May 2011, I asked about the carbs, as I had been given a turnaround time of 4 weeks, due to a backlog; he told me that the Fukushima earthquake had disrupted his supply of parts, and he was scrambling to acquire a new source.
On 23 June 2011, I emailed him about the status of my carbs. His response on 24 Jun 2011 was: "Terence, you should expect to hear that they're ready to ship in the next couple of days. [continued below]....
..... I've shut down some auctions until we get caught up with this backlog. I love the work but I hate keeping folks waiting--especially since I underestimated the response I'd get and the time it takes to get them
out." Keep in mind, this is 10 weeks after he said that he had them.
On 15 July 2011 I again asked him about my carbs. He replied that the EPA had shut down his old shop but "...They'll be on the way VERY shortly. "
On 22 July 2011, I received an email from oldschoolcarbs saying that he had made a mistake; that my carb overhaul had been completed for quite a while ("Your carbs are completely finished, and have been for some time"), and all that was lacking was the aluminum plenum (part of the carb's airbox) to finish up. He thought that he had told me that he need it. He did offer me a refund if I didn't want to continue, or I could send him the part... which was never before mentioned in any communications between us or in the Ebay listing instructions.
On 27 July 2011, he said that he had confused me with another customer , but again offered to finish the work if I sent him the plenum. He offered to refund my money and still do the work if he received the plenum, but at that point I had tired of his promises; I sent him a one-line email, "Sorry. Lost my faith in you. Just send me the carbs and the refund." I did receive the refund that day via Paypal.
So then in another email on 27 July he gets pissy with me, saying it's all my fault for not sending him a complete set of parts (the plenum), which he goes on to say that he could have borrowed from another customers set for assembly; berates me for not allowing a trained professional (him) to complete the work at no cost (besides the 3 months of waiting); he tells me that the cleaning and prep work is complete but I don't deserve it... but wait, he said they were done, right? He told me "...kiss my a*s.." and said that normally he would send it back to me the next day, but because I offended him, he wouldn't go to his "shipper" aka the US Post Office, for several days.
Apparently, he must have felt bad about it, or because I told him I wanted a shipping confirmation in 1 week, because on 28 July 2011 he sent an email that claimed he would send them out  "on Monday". Of course, he didn't say WHAT Monday... they went out11 days later on Monday 08 Aug 2011.
What I got was just a box with 8 bags of parts in it, not completed carbs like this liar said I would get. He cheated me out of 3 months of summer riding, cost me a lot of gas since I used my truck insted of my bike, and just frustrated the hell out of me with all of his LIES.
I think that this guy is an incompetant mechanic and a bald-faced LIAR. Don't take your bike anywhere near him, it may disappear for months like mine did.

Setting the record straight.

AUTHOR: oldschoolcarbs - (United States of America)

First, I'm glad that the carbs were sorted to his satisfaction. According to his ebay feedback, Mr. Carr is reputable, knowledgeable, and reliable.

Second, there is no evidence to suggest that Mr. Maguire was, or is, in any way directly associated with the ICOA, CBXWorld, The Naked Goldwing Forum, or with any executive staff members thereof who believe that sending barnyard porn to women and children is an acceptable practice.

Those individual have merely used a link to this report to advance their cause. Thus I have begun the practice of providing my own links where appropriate.

I wish Mr. Maguire many years of happy riding.

What is this guy talking about?

AUTHOR: Terence - (United States of America)

I have no idea what Mr. Wagner is talking about... after I finished my ordeal with him, I found a GREAT V-4 mechanic at www.v4market.com named Billy Carr. Mr Carr did an AWESOME job of assembling the absolute mess that I was left with by Mr. Wagner, along with all of the missing pieces that he scrounged up for me. I highly recommend Mr. Carr; his work is top-notch, and he completed my work in only 2 weeks!

As for Mr Wagner... I have no idea why he has tried to drag ME into his latest fiasco; since my last post (about a year ago?) I haven't even given him a single thought... why bother? I got my bike fixed by someone else, so the past is the past. If he continues to have problems with his customers, then that just shows that maybe it's not all the customers that are at fault; maybe it's you. But leave me OUT of it. We're done. I have NOTHING to do with whatever drama he's involved in now, and I don't really care about it. Sheesh!

Sheesh, get a life will you?

AUTHOR: oldschoolcarbs - (United States of America)

I've had nothing but grief from this guy's soulmates.

I did a carb job for a local guy. He complained (six months later!) and demanded his money back but wouldn't show me what was supposedly wrong with them, which was nothing all along. He was just out to raise some hell and maybe pick up some easy money.

Having failed to intimidate me over the course of a hundred or so text messages, he sent my wife a video clip of a young girl performing oral sex on a horse. Through no fault of our own, our teenage daughter was the one who opened the message. Police were called, criminal case is pending, and civil suits are in the offing. But get this: he didn't use a random internet clip but manufactured it specifically for us.

Nobody knows the identity of the girl in the video (his daughter perhaps?) but boy did he do a bang-up job producing it. He must do this all the time. And he has small children!

In the mean time I learned that the pervert received encouragement from my main competitor and that the administrators of a certain web portal protected them both from people learning what they were up to.

They tell me that I'm evil for shining a light on them and have distributed links to this site as a prime example of what a crook I am. Gimme a break. Read about it here--->Forum Drama

It pains me to get into the mud with you but since you've pressed the point I've got an obligation to my wife and daughter to shine it on you too.

Terence, go spew your nonsense somewhere else. Everyone who reads this will know what you and your like-minded friends are really all about.

More lies from Mr. Wagner

AUTHOR: Terence - (United States of America)

This is just more of what I've come to expect from Mr. Wagner.   As I stated previously, he never stated in his ad or his emails, except the one on 22 July 2011, that he needed the plenum:     "

it appears that we've had a miscommunication. I recall talking to someone a while back and saying that I can't work on a set of V4 carburetors without having the airbox plenum (the aluminum "box" that the four carburetor bodies mount to.)  I
thought that was you, and that you were gong to send it along. If I'm mistaken and I never said anything to you either over the phone or through email I'm terribly sorry and of course I'll take full responsibility.

Your carbs are completely finished, and have been for some time. All that I'm missing is the plenum. I can send them to
you as they are and I'll happily refund your money either way, but you'll have to complete the most difficult and critical parts of the assembly.

Again, I'm terribly sorry this has happened. Mistakes, although I can proudly say very rarely occur, do happen and I'll
do whatever it takes to get it handled to your satisfaction."     But being 4 months in to a carb rebuild, and having heard various excuses up to that point, I had had it with him. How could I know that I wouldn't be waiting another 4 months? Or that they would be done at all? So I cut my losses, got my money back, along with a total of 17 bags of parts.
It's also interesting to note that in his rebuttal Mr. Wagner just doesn't say that this was just a one-time fluke; that he's really sorry that it happened, and that he usually does timely work... good PR for future customers, right?    NO.
He just complains about the customer, and he's just an innocent lamb. I have my emails to/from him to back up my story. All he has is excuses and vitriol. Don't use this guy.

#5 REBUTTAL Individual responds

AUTHOR: oldschoolcarbs - (United States of America)

This guy is one of those customers you hope you never encounter but somehow they make themselves unavoidable.

He demonstrates a remarkable penchant for taking one's words out of context in a manner that always benefits HIM. He's one hundred percent unforgiving and absolutely intractable. I did indeed have trouble getting parts from Japan but whatever.

So here's the deal. For those readers who are familiar with Honda V4 motorcycle carbretors, you know that the integrity of the whole unit is 100 percent dependent on the metal airbox plenum. Terence sent his set to me without it, which I brough to his attention. Twice, in fact--once when I got them and again when the
carb bodies and parts were fully restored to like new condition.

Rather than simply send it along he engaged in a weeks-long battle over trivialities such as that I'd
never specifically said to include it with the carburetors. I patiently explained to him that one may indeed be able to remove the carb bodies from the engine more easily with the plenum removed but
that step one of the final assembly process is: Have plenum at the ready because you can't begin without it. Synchronization, linkage alignment, fuel/air circuit integrity, and choke function are all 100
percent determined by the final fit of the individual bodies relative to each other on the plenum.

I even offered to swipe a plenum from another customer's carbs provided that he give me his word that his was on the way. Never mind how unethical it would be for me to borrow one customer's parts for another project, he got pissed that I hadn't done this weeks ago. Interestingly, no word about sending me his.

Personally I think he's lost it. (Pun intended.) What other reason could he have for digging his heels in this way. On three separate occasions I pointed out that if he'd stop quibbling and send the d**n plenum he'd have a beautiful set of carburetors, a working motorcycle, AND his money back. Nothing, except of course for more whining.

After this I did indeed tell him to kiss my a*s. Wouldn't you?

In the end, I refunded his money and returned everything to him with all the parts sorted and neatly bagged according to type. Mind you, they look like the've never been assembled or used--even better than new owing to polished parts. I spent a LOT of time on this project. I even replaced some tiny springs that he'd lost.

Then I saw what he'd written about me. I was raised to finish what I start even if the guy's an a**wipe so I offered, yet again, to assemble them if he'd merely send ALL of the parts to me. His reply: "Go away, you turd." Okay then.

Thanks for reading.
