Bank sends me a letter saying all of their information has been breached they will be sending me a new card. I recieve a new card and call to activate it. I was put on hold for 45 minutes then gave up. I call back the following week, again, on hold. When they finally are done transferring me around they ask me a slew of security questions. Questions which had NOTHING to do with my life.

The asked me what kind of car I drive then gave 4 examples. Its right on my credit report I drive a Prius! But they missed that. They asked me what addresses I have ever been associated with, NONE they mentioned, they asked me if I knew people, which I have never heard of.

Then they said my card was frozen, I am cut off from the use of my card they will not activate the new card until I send them my driver license, passport, and utility bills to a PO box 80055 Salinas CA 93912
At this point I want to close this account as this horrible bank but I have had it so long on my credit report I and I know it looks bad when you close accounts.
This bank is horrible. This is just one more thing the customer service is terrible if and when you can actually get through to someone, they change interest to suit them, they do not increase limits even when you pay your card off every month.

AND the worst and most scary thing to me is their "SECURITY QUESTIONS" seem to be ENTIRELY about another person all together!

Something is OFF with this bank, I suggest a FULL SCALE FDIC investigation

The security questions...

are not necessarily based on your credit report but on information based on public records. For example if you've ever purchased a home the public records would have you associated with that address. If you were ever in a club, public records might have the membership list. But as Nikki said, the bank is trying to make sure that they are talking with you to reactivate the card. Since the questions were not answered correctly they can require further verification. They may allow you to go into a nearby branch and present your ID if you don't want to mail it.

They want to verify that it's you.

I have only seen those kind of security questions online, however I haven't called any of my creditors in a long time, so I'm not sure what they are doing these days. In order to verify that it's you, they ask questions that may or may not be found on your credit report. If it's on your credit report and you answer the right answers, they know it's you. For example, the car you drive. The computer knows the answer, they just want to see if you answer it correctly to verify it's you. Sometimes they ask you your mortgage or car payment, sometimes they ask you if know people, etc. They can ask you bogus names to see if you say no, or they can ask you about names of people you have had joint accounts with in the past, to see if you say yes. They may ask you about your past addresses, or totally made up addresses and you have to say none.

Since you may have given them a hard time about answering the questions, they are now requiring you send them the identifications they requested to verify your identity. As of right now, they don't know it's really you and last they knew, your card was breached.

If it's any comfort, I believe the verification program they use has automated, multiple choice questions. I think they enter in your info and get security questions to ask you based on your credit report. If they are answered correctly, they may go on. If they are not answered correctly, the computer will not let you go any further. And, by answered correctly, I mean the answers must pertain to what your credit report shows.
