we had orkin come out and spray our house for $99 for the first 2 months and $36 for every month after that. they came out 4 times in the first 2 months to spray for roaches, and i noticed the problem was getting worse not better, so I contested having to pay for another month after the first 2 months of treatments did nothing.

they said they were sorry we were dissatisfied but that i owed them $36, at which point i informed them my of the original agreement. she smarted off and said "well i don't know why they would tell u that; we don't do that." i kindly told her how dissatisfied i was and that i wanted to discontinue service with them, and that i would pay the $36 so it wouldn't go against my credit and i started calling around to find another pest control business.

about a week later, an orkin employee showed up at my door and told me they were sorry that i was dissatisfied, and they would like to spray again. i told him to go ahead, since i hadn't found another pest control service yet.

the following days were a nightmare that we are still battling!!! they apparently put something out to attract roaches and rats (we didn't have rats before we called orkin btw), and now we have a problem that is worse than when we called them! and on top of that, we called orkin to tell them how awful they made the problem and they promised to send someone out for 2 weeks in a row and no one ever showed up!!! now i have to fork out yet another $100 to get rid of the problem orkin caused with roaches and now rats!

is this business really that vengeful? i have 3 kids that have been miserably suffering from respitory illnesses since our roach problem quadruppled and now i have the wonderful job of cleaning up rat droppings all over my house! we went from seeing a roach, maybe 2, at night only, to my whole kitchen floor moving with roaches; during the day, at night, it doesn't matter; my dressers and clothes and cabinets are just loaded now, and here orkin promised to get rid of the minor roach problem we had and was spraying the whole time only to make them the worst infestation i have ever seen in less than 3 months!

Pest Management

AUTHOR: James - (U.S.A.)

I am not employed by Orkin but I have been a certified Pest Control Professional for over 20 years. And yes, I am responding to a complaint that is old but hope I can offer some information that may enlighten other consumers. First of all; when dealing with cockroaches (and from the sound of your experience you may be dealing with German Cockroaches) it is imperative for the customer to follow the instruction of the applicator if the application is to be effective. This means removing harborages or debris in the home where cockroaches may hide, not leaving exposed food out, sealing cracks and crevices where roaches hide, etc. In other words; you need to help the exterminator help you. This way you will benefit yourself. Also, in regard to the pesticides in your home: The label on the product is the law. Any responsible applicator will follow the label to the T and take into consideration health issues of the homes occupants if they are made known. There are alternatives to spraying such as targeted baiting and vaccuuming . If spraying is necessary, the house can be vacated until any non-residual pesticide has dissipated (usually 1-2 hours). If the application truly made someone sick; I would assert that it is the fault of the individual tech and not the company. As regards to the rats; I am sure that Orkin neither dropped them off at your house nor did they put something out to attract them. More than likely there is a gap or gaps in your foundation or structure in excess of 1/2 inch that need to be sealed to keep them out. This is called exclusion and is an Integrated Pest Management component. Google IPM if you will.  And in conclusion, please do not throw dirt on a whole company before you educate yourself. Orkin has been a reputable company for many years. The large companies tend to have a large employee turnover and from time to time you may get a bad tech. Your best option would be to follow the techs instructions as regards to sanitation and exclusion. Then, If your results are still not acceptable, complain up the chain of command til you get a seasoned technician and I'm sure you will see improvement.

Get your kids checked!

AUTHOR: Robin - (U.S.A.)

The poison in the bug spray, is hazardous to your health, and that of your children. There has been a link between these pesticides and childhood cancer. If your kids have had a reaction since Orkin was there, don't suspect the roaches and rats first. it's probably the spray! I would search another approach. Sorry this whole thing happened to you!

It sounds like Orkin did what they promised....

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

"...orkin promised to get rid of the minor roach problem we had ...."

Yep- sounds like they got rid of your minor roach problem by replacing it with a major roach problem... and added rats at no extra charge? Such a deal!

Clemson Extension has "the bug guys" on SC Public Radio, and "the bug guys" give advice and guidance on infestation problems; they also list complaints against exterminators. Maybe you want to talk to the Clemson people? Also check the various Clemson websites.
