PC Fix Care www.pcfixcare.com Scareware scam Edinburgh Scotland

My Father was recently cold called by a computer company who claimed to be based in Edinburgh (PCFixCare). They told him that they were aware that he was experiencing problems with his computer and that they would be able to sell him some software that would fix the problems.

 I work in the IT industry and this is definitely a scareware scam. They showed him errors in his computers Event Log - errors that almost all computers in the world will have - as evidence that his computer was close to crashing. They requested access to his computer so that they could further prove that his computer was "infected" with something. Unfortunately, he did give them access to his computer. Once they had demonstrated the 'problems' they said that they were able to fix all of these problems if he bought their software /  service for about £160. Fortunately, the computer my Father has is a work machine and he would have had to seek authorisation from his company for this payment, so the call went no further. However, I'm concious that this sort of scam will effect many other people who aren't so lucky.

 During the call the company led my Father to believe that they worked with Microsoft who had passed details of my Fathers problems on to them to solve.

 I have reported this company to trading standards in Edinburgh. They have investigated and this company is not and has never been based from this address. 

 Avoid at all costs. Scam company.
