I arrived at Pep Boys at 7:55 AM Saturday, June 23, 2007 because they open at 8:00 AM. I was assured I was first in line by a parts person and at 8:35 AM, Juan the Service Writer showed up. It only took just under an hour to place my Service Request for an oil change, tire rotate and a coolant flush.

I pick up the car at noon, pay the $130.00 charge (ripoff), drive 3 blocks home and park it in my garage. At 8:00 PM that night, I go out to start the car and notice I am missing a wheel cover. Not a big deal except this is a Jaguar Vandem Plas cover that costs $425.00. I drive less than 10 miles and for the first time since I have owned the car, the "Coolant Low" warning light comes on.

I arrived at Pep Boys at 8:55 AM Sunday, June 24, 2007 because they open at 9:00 AM. At 9:45 AM, afer waiting almost another hour, I explained my probelms to Brian the Service Writer. He says I should have been told they do not do coolant flushes on Jags or Mercedes.

He then takes my copy of the Work Order, matches it up with the store copy from a large stack of yesterday's work orders, goes in back to 'look' for my wheel cover, and comes back with a miraculous discovery. Written in pen, not printed like the rest of the document, is a sentence that now says "Right front wheel cover missing when car arrived". They either damaged or stole my wheel cover and now are trying to defraud me out of the $425.000 cost of replacing it.

As to the 'Low Coolant' warning light, Brian says he has no mechanics, just tire changers to address today's advertised tire ripoff offer, and I would need to come back on Monday, June 25, 2007.

While waiting in line, I discover half of the people are there to get their shoddy work rectified. All were told to come back Monday after getting jerked around for the entire weekend Their 'mechanics' work on commission which is why they show up when they want to, do not know what they are doing and why Pep Boys will not stand behind their work.

A word to the wise, you would be better off walking or using mass transit while your car is being worked on by reputable, honest repair places like (((redacted)). At least you will still have all or your wheel covers and they will stand behind their work.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

The manager incriminated himself.

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

If you were told that Pep Boys does not do collant flushes on Jags, why do you have a reciept showing they charged you for it? You need to notify your local consumer protection division of the AG's office. That is outright fraud.

As far as the wheel cover goes, I have a problem with an expensive car having hub caps! Spend about $150 per wheel and get some decent custom wheels on that performance car.

FYI..When you pay a mechanic, you are supposed to get the most recent copy of all workorders with all of the most recent annotations and remarks. That is standard practice. You should always fully inspect your car when you drop it off and also when you pick it up.

When I used to drive nice cars, I ALWAYS made the service advisor do a walk around with me when I dropped off my car. This puts them on notice not to screw anything up.

File a small claims case against them and they will pay up before it ever goes to court. You just have to let them know you are serious.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Did you pay cash?

AUTHOR: Jethro - (U.S.A.)

If you didn't pay cash, stop payment and let them try to sue you. If you are litigious, you can easily beat them.

Pep Boys used to be a good, reputable company, but now they all try to do as little work as possible to generate the most profit.

Most of their employees have no formal mechanic training and have no clue what they are doing.

The manager totally wrote in that comment about the wheel cover being missing.

Like the other guy said, I wouldn't bring my Ford in for service to Pep Boys, much less a Jag.

#3 Consumer Comment

You drive a Jaguar Vanden Plas and you take it to Pep Boys for maintenance???

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

I would LOVE to hear why!

If you are going to drive a Jaguar Vanden Plas, then take it to a Jag dealer or a repair shop that specalizes in such cars and is also highly recommended.

I remember a story 40 years ago about a chap who drove a 6 cyl Porsche ('Carrara'). He took it to a shop that supposedly put the wrong spark plugs in it and later while crusing on the freeway bad expensive things happened to his motor.

I remember a saying: If you want to play, be able to pay. The reality is that either you will pay for excellent maintenance or you will pay even more for shoddy maintenance. Its your choice.
