On February 27, 2008, my parents purchased a dog for me from Petland. He is a mix breed called a "Cavachon". He is a joy to have and is a wonderful animal, but he is sick. Petland legally sold my parents a sick animal with kennel cough and blood in his stools. I have documentation from the store where the pets caretakers daily updated how he was doing.

Born in October, Petland recieved him in December of 2007. Since they recieved him, they notated he had blood in his stools, in which they gave him 'preventive meds'. They also notated his coughing, but it doesn't appear anything was done. This is just plain stupid since kennel cough is contagious to other dogs and probably spread to any other animal he came in contact with. Petland litterally kept an animal in a cage and didn't properly take care of him. When he was purchased, the vet there told my parents that the blood in his stools was caused due to 'stress' and that it was normal and would go away.

To this date, it has not gone away. Not trusting their vet, I took my beautiful dog to my own vet closeby. My vet was very concerned about the blood in his stools, especially since he has had it almost all his life. He ran some tests and sent us home with medication, but we are unsure what the cause is as of yet. All I know for sure is that Petland sold him to us on a lie that he was perfectly healthy at the time of sale and Petland did not care for him properly when they knew he was not well. Petland and its employee's do not care for animals, they are just there to get your money.

Petland Responds

AUTHOR: Petland - (U.S.A.)

This consumer was contacted shortly after learning of her post on this site. Unfortunately, she followed none of our post-purchase protocol. Here's what we provide:

14 days of care free of charge for any viral issues, or anything related to the transition from the store to the home (i.e. stress). This care is provided free of charge at a very reputable veterinary clinic locally - not owned, operated, or in any way related to the store or it's owners. These are babies, and just like human babies "stress" takes many forms - two most notable are changes in stool or upper respiratory infections. The change of environment from the store to the home can cause stress - that is a medical fact.

All vaccines are up to date - this puppy had received the entire series of puppy vaccines - a total of 5 series + one rabies vaccine.

One year hereditary/congenital warranty - covering all expenses for anything related to a diagnosis of this kind in full up to the purchase price of the puppy.

This consumer never took her puppy to the contracted vet, and thereby voided her entire warranty! When we called her to ask about her posting, she said puppy was doing well and she never found out what was causing blood in it's stool.

We've sent more than 3000 puppies home in 4 years. We have very, very few complaints. The biggest issue is people's unrealistic expectations - this isn't a new pair of shoes. Puppies are living, breathing beings and mother nature has some control that we can't change. We do everything in our power to make sure they are healthy and happy when they leave the store, and we provide for their care after purchase to the best of our ability. Don't know how we can do much more.

This customer paid $288 for a fully vaccinated, beautiful puppy - and received all the post-purchase care provided she use it. That's about all we can do.
