In the play area where you can visit the pups, there is a sign up about financing the purchase of your dog. (?) I asked the sales girl about pet shops and puppy mills and was told that all of the animals come from local breeders. She told me I should hurry if I wanted this puppy because he wouldn't make it past the weekend - meaning someone would buy him. I hated being lied to. She also told me that she worked there because they were good to the animals. How could they be when they were never let out of their cells?
I DID not buy from this pet store nor would I EVER patronize this business. A vet in the neighborhood told me that she has heard many horror stories of pups purchased from this petstore. SHAME ON PETLAND!

Local breeders? HA!

A reputable breeder will make you sign a contract stating that if something happens whereas you are unable to keep the dog, that you return it to them. A responsible breeder will give you limited registration rights unless screening you thoroughly so that you cannot breed the dog. A reputable breeder is only interested in improving the breed standard, NOT making a profit.
With that being said, do you really think that a reputable breeder would ALLOW their puppies to go to just anyone with the money, from a Pet store? HELL NO!
Another thing to consider, depending on the breed, there are usually 5-8 puppies in a litter. When you see ONE puppy of fifty different breeds at Petland, where do you think the others are?
Wise up people - as long as there are Petlands, there will be puppy mills to supply them.

You were in Petland for a grand total of perhaps an hour or more and you probably didn't make it past the puppy units. Did you see what goes into the day to day care? Did you see the kennel staff doing morning sanitation by breaking down each individual unit and cleansing everything? Did you see daily checks on the animals? Where you there for the weekly vet checks? Did you stay for the fish staff to do weekly water changes on all the systems? Did you stand over the staff as food was prepared specifically for individual animal needs?
No.
So, y'know what? You don't know anything about the care given to any of the animals there and have no right to speak about the care of animals there.
I'm writing as an ex-employee, and I honestly worked there because the staff cared about animals. The motto there was "Pets Come First." And they truly did. Not customers, not pet owners, but pets. Our animals were our number one priority, beyond that of any normal petstore. Our store owner, along with several staffers, would regularly trek to the store for hours on days when the weather shut down roads, schools, and other business, and on the holidays.
Get your facts straight before you go and badmouth an otherwise fantastic store. >=P
