We took our poodle Millie to Petsmart on I-35 for grooming Sat morning. They called to say she jerked real bad while they were trimming her face. The clippers cut into her cheek and they wanted permission to take her to the vet. The vet had to take interior and exterior stitches because the cut was so deep. While under anestesia on the operating table she had a heart attack and died.

Millie insisted on looking through the fence at the passersby on the sidewalk. We put windows at her level in the fence for her to see out. It was the first place she went in the yard. We plan to put her ashes in that corner next to the red crepe myrtle. She will like that.
I know this is sad news for dog lovers. I just want you to be aware that our pets don't have to be sick to die and that a mundate trip, such as to the grooming salon, can turn into a tragedy. No one expects to drop off her pet for grooming and never see her again.

Bigdave (Don't need Freud to see though that nickname)

You have a severe lack of knowledge regarding dogs and people. Unless a dog has extreme emotional disorders and/or lacking socialization, a dog does not in any way feel it has been abandoned'. Very few dogs are unable to adapt very quickly to a new temporary' guardian. Most dogs in fact enjoy all the new canine and even human friends in the Grooming Salon.

You have also shown a severe lack of knowledge regarding the people' working in the Grooming Salon, which leads me to doubt your claim of ever being a manager for any PetSmart or for that matter, that you have ever even been in a PetSmart. Perhaps it is merely that none of the women' regardless of their ages, would give you the time of day leaving the only dissatisfied person' with a chip on their shoulder there, being you.

Once again your ignorance is apparent since no Groomer would prefer or want the Pet Parent' to remain anywhere in view since this 99%' of the time causes the dog to be agitated and excited and rarely if ever' is a comfort to the dog. 99% of the excited' dogs that come in, calm down within moments of the Pet Parent' leaving.

Your thoughtless ranting here of trying to instill guilt on a person that has suffered the loss of a family member' is shameful! If you had indeed ever worked for PetSmart, I for one am grateful you no longer work in an industry you are so obviously unqualified to work in.

As for the accident to Millie, Dog Lover, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Most dogs do not like to have their faces groomed and sadly it can take one wrong move on either the dogs and/or Groomers part to have an accident. There are a lot of distractions at times that can cause the dog to squirm' such as another dog passing by or on another table.

I can only imagine how horrible this has been for you as well as for the Groomer. My heart goes out to you all. Millie was very lucky to have such a wonderful loving family and now this new puppy has been blessed with a loving home. Dogs bring happiness, joy and love unconditionally'.

It is a shame really that some people like this 'Bigdave' take pleasure in another persons pain, but it is totally shameful when they attempt to inflict even more. (Easy to see here who really needs to get a life')

Update: Petsmart did the right thing

AUTHOR: Dog lover - (U.S.A.)

The employees at this store were so sorry for our loss, they sent flowers, cremated little Millie, and reimbursed us for a puppy. Although the dog we lost will always have a place in our hearts and family, we were treated with kindness and fairness by Petsmart. What happened was a tragedy we all want to forget. Thanks to those of you who were sympathic.

BIG DAVE, PUT YOUR HEAD UNDER WATER ABOUT 5 MINUTES

Petsmart is a rip off. I have not used their vet services, but I have seen the unqualified employees that know nothing about the birds trying to care for birds. I also know that a location in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area killed an Umbrella Cockatoo due to no knowledge of how to care for the poor baby.

AND AS FOR YOU BIG DAVE, THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE ME IN THE WORLD FOR DIFFERENT REASONS THAT CANNOT OR WILL NOT HAVE KIDS. I HAVE 2 PARROTS AND THOSE ARE MY BABIES/KIDS. AND IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO THEM IN THE HANDS OF A SITTER OR VET I WOULD HAUL THEIR A$$ INTO COURT, perhaps I won't get much but its the principle of the thing.

big dave um your a jerk!!!!

You are a little insensitve don't ya think bigdave? she never once said she considered it her child. i would get upset if that happened to my dog and i have children. it was the groomers fault! If the groomer noticed that the dog was acting hyper then that's when you call the owner, not just go ahead and do the job because you kill the dog obvisouly you don't get paid. and how dare you say all groomers have questionable sexuality, and an illegal habit? do you know this groomer personally? i assume not, therefore you have no right to draw conclusions from a situation you really no nothing about.

as for OP, i am very sorry for this bad situation. like i already said, i would be upset if this happened to my animal too. they are a part of your family, and apperantley ole bigdave has never had a pet he's felt that way about or he wouldn't have been so cruel.

"pet parents?"

Perhaps a good idea to keep in mind for your further pets..
Dogs are not children, dogs are not replacements for people, dogs are and always will be animals, wild at heart, and instinctually bound to the way that they operate. Inadvertantly, I am quite sure, you managed to make yourself the "Alpha Male" or pack leader in your dogs eyes. When you abandoned her, yes Abandoned - because thats how she views the situation - you were leaving her in a hyper stressed situation. This situation usually creates a large amount of anxiety which can be dealt with in many different forms depending on the animal and breed of animal. For your dog it seems that general jumpiness was the release of angst that was building up.

Now by no means am I defending petsmart groomers, I was a manager for petsmart for many years before coming to the realization that the company cares about the corporate office rather than the consumer, the stores, or the staff as a whole. and frankly, the groomers are normally middle aged, dis-satisfied women with a chip on each shoulder and atleast one illegal habit. That being said... It was more than likely not the groomers fault and here is why.

The dog was abandoned and freaked out - it became agitated and jumpy. The groomer started to groom, knowing this jumpiness is not going to lessen or stop any time soon. The groomer damaged the dog's face on accident. The standard procedure for pets mart is to get the dog to the vet imediately, before contacting the owner. Get a vet evaluation while contacting the owner. Once the owner understands petsmart pays all vet costs and approves the procedure, it goes forth.

Now back to why the groomer is not at fault, once again, you abandoned your dog leaving it in a hyper stressed state creating alot of anxiety (by the way, that makes for an unhappy dog all around and usually makes them unruly) and due to unfortunate circumstances the dog was put under anesthesia, which has deadly consequences for humans as well and is why there is a need for highly trained specialists for this field.

In summation, Dont leave your dogs alone!

The groomers would prefer you stay there and comfort your dog 90% of the time anyway. Only 90% of the time because lets face it, according to petsmart its base clientell is a 45yr female who makes a good living, has a questionable sexuality, and has no life. (that figure is straight out of petsmart Unleashed management training, 2001 - and yes the questionable sexuality was the term used) I added the no life part.
