Phillips Towing engages in illegal vehicle seizures.

I was a guest of a resident who lives in a private community, where Phillips Towing is on a contract with the homeowner's association.

There is no information regarding what constitutes an 'unauthorized vehicle' on the warning signs posted on the property; no hours, no rules. I parked at the curb in front of my friends house and we had dinner and watched a movie...when I got ready to leave at approximately 11:45pm, my car was gone.

The next morning, when I went to collect my car, I asked the person at the towing office if they had received a call from someone in the community, or if it was a routine sweep. She told me that no one had called them. I asked how their driver could possibly make a determination about who is or isn't 'authorized' to park there unless they receive a complaint, further explaining that I was a guest of a resident of the community. The woman was unsympathetic and only said that I'd need to take it up with the homeowner's association. Needless to say, I was extorted for $170 in order to retrieve my car.

I can certainly understand if I had parked illegally, blocked someone's driveway or had left my car there for days on end, but I was visiting for only a few hours. The tow truck driver just took it upon himself to tow my car without any justification whatsoever.
