General Manager
Polygon Northwest Company
109 E 13th Street, Suite 200
Vancouver, WA 98660

General Manager,
I am writing to express my frustrations about the quality of the materials and poor workmanship used in construction of my Polygon Northwest home.
In August 2010, I purchased a property built by your company in 1995 located at Tualatin, Oregon 97062.  After moving in and updating a multitude of Contractor Grade fixtures, I now realize how poor the materials used were and how inexperienced your work crew must have been who built the house.  I seriously question whether construction of these properties met building codes in place in 1996.
Listed below are a few of the items I have had to deal with at my expense to correct inferior workmanship and poor quality materials used in the construction of this property:
The back plate glass windows were not installed properly.  They were attached to the studs instead of the sheathing.  Without proper waterproofing, they leaked.
Leaking caused water damage and dry rot.  The exterior sheathing (that gave the wall strength) was compromised, allowing the wall to flex, allowing the doors to bind, and allowing the mud joints at the windows to crack.
The sheathing did not have a 3" nailing pattern at the corner to provide the proper amount of shear protection, adding to the weakness of the wall.
Toilets, tub/shower, faucets and sinks were all cheaply manufactured and do not always work effectively.  Toilets installed in the house were the cheapest available and are constantly clogging due to their inability to flush solids.
Floors on the second level creak excessively.  I had the carpet replaced and after the old carpet was removed, it was obvious that the construction workers had no idea where the floor joists were that they were trying to screw into.  There were screws in the flooring at different patterns attempting to screw into a joist.in most cases, they were unsuccessful and the screw was not secured in the joist.
Corner sections of wood on the outside of the house had to be replaced due to rot.  There was no caulking evident to prevent water from wicking into the wood.  Im sure that Ill have to do this for more corner sections in the very near future as they are showing signs of rot.
Studs were not aligned, resulting in crooked walls.  In the poorly-designed master bathroom, there is a variance on the baseboards of over inch within an 11 inch span.  Needless to say, I replaced all baseboards and door moldings in the house to rectify the poor quality materials and sub-standard workmanship used in construction of this property.
Drywall used in construction of the house is very thin and of poor quality.
As indicated in the opening, my intent is to communicate to you my frustration in your companys ability to construct a quality home.
It is obvious to me that Polygon Northwests intent was to manufacture houses using the cheapest (read lowest quality) products available.  Well, you have succeeded.  Your company did this by installing low quality fixtures instead of purchasing better quality items for a few hundred dollars more.  Believe me, it was not worth it.  During the construction of this housing division, Polygon Northwest was focused on short-tem profits over long-term relationshipsconsumers are smart and can see right through this plan.  My neighbors and I now relate to Polygon Northwest as a builder who uses low-quality fixtures/materials, which translates into Polygon Northwest as being a low-quality builder.  These types of low-quality properties do not belong in Tualatin.
Please respond to this letter as I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
