Portfolio Recovery is a fraud. And they are thieves. Do not ever give them your bank information in order to settle a debt.  They contacted me in July 2011 in reference to an 15yr old debt, which by the way doesnt even appear on my credit report anymore. I agreed to pay because i remember the dept and because i thought the debt would boost my credit score. We agreed upon a 6 month repayment plan and then the acct would be settled. However, i just noticed that it is now 8 months later and they are still deducting money from my acct. So here's the good part....I called them to let them know that my debt is settled and that they are still deducting money from me. They tell me that the account is set up to be paid for over a year and that i must continue to pay for the acct to be settled. I said that is ridiculous and that i know what i agreed upon. It is so sad and pathetic that companies can get away with siphering money from someone's personal checking acct! I took off work today so that i can go to the bank and place a stop order on my acct to keep them from taking my money. And it will make me less enthusiastic about settling an old debt in the future.

Yep you got duped

Yep, sorry to say this but you got duped.  The debt was past the statute of limitations and beyond 7 years old so not only did you not have to pay on it, by paying on it you restarted the clock on the statute of limitations thereby actually making your credit report and/or score worse.

Never listen to these guys, never pay them a dime, show up in court if you get a summons then prove the debt is past the statute of limitations.  Send them a certified letter telling them not to contact you again or you will sue their sorry asses.

Sorry you got shafted.
