On 12/18/08 my mother, a senior citizen living off of a small retirement and what little money she makes on a part time job, went to the Golden Valley Precision Tune AutoCare to get the serpentine belt replaced as they had suggested.

Since my father passed away a year ago and I live better than an hour drive away, she wanted to try to get her 1995 Ford van fixed herself by taking it to someone she thought she could trust.

She was subsequently charged $66.77 for the belt itself (well over a 200% markup for the retail cost of same), plus $58.33 for labor (anyone who's ever changed a serpentine belt knows it takes approximately 5 minutes or less) AND she was changed an additional $9.61 for "shop supplies" (for what?!). After sales tax and their $5.00 coupon the total came to $134.32 - for a $20.00 part and 5 minutes labor.

This is what I would call a predatory service shop. They will charge what they feel they can get away with - if the customer does not know any better, thinks they can trust them, and is worried about being stranded, they will be taken advantage of!

fair price

AUTHOR: newtominnesota - (United States of America)

The $140 might have been a bit high, but well within the range.  Call several other places and price out the job. You'll find that 140 is about right.  You priced a $20 belt. Is it the cheapest, crappy belt? Price a Goodyear or a Gates belt, LOTS more.  Just make sure you have an apples to apples comparison before you complain.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

whooo

AUTHOR: Kurt - (USA)

I feel $140.00 was fair. Did they fix it right? Did you price it out at a dealership? it would have been twice as much. It's a business not a charity, how do you think they make money? Predatory, not even close. The tool to change some of these belts costs 100.00, don't be mad that the tech was that good that it only took 5 minutes. They did there job and got her on the road without taking all day. I waited longer to get air put in my tires. If the belt was a quailty belt it cost them $60.00, tech 20.00 hr,tools 100000+, electricty 30.00 a day, computer paper  1.00 per page, insurance 10000. yr, coffee $10.00 week, rent $2500.00 month. MIKE GET REAL, it probably costed them money to change the belt if they had no other work that day. I sorry that your mother dosen't have alot of money but neither do I(umemployeed), if you want your mother to not have to fix her car then take it away.
