"In my opinion", Prepaid Legal is a ripoff because the services paid for are not as described by the sales person. Calls are not returned by so called reputable law firm. Impossible to contact firm directly (answering service only) Knowing what I do now I would never have signed up for the plan when it was offered as an employment benefit.

Save your money,

Your Rip Off Report is Unfair

AUTHOR: Mark - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 28, 2015

I have been a member of Legal Shield for about 15 years. If a salesman mislead you, assuming he did, he was possibly some fly by night commission person that didn't last with the company long, then blame it on that person. Not all employees, assuming he was an employee and not a independent sales person, obey company policy. If he did mislead you, then Legal Shield was a victim of this person the same as you.

You didn't explain how you were mislead and of course I bet he would have his side of the story as well. Who was right or wrong, is anyone's guess. Sometimes things are explained to people and they just don't get it. So this could have also been your fault. A common misconception of people is that they can pay about $25 a month or whatever and basically have a law firm of $250-300/hr attorneys at their beckon call. This is because some people do not have the attention span to listen to, read(the agreement), or understand the details. So they assume and then when their assumption catches up with them, they blame it on everyone else.

Filing a rip off report that pops up on google everytime the name Legal Shield is searched is really way over the top for something the company may not have had anything to do with. Also, their service is month to month payment so if you don't like it, you can quit anytime. It isn't like you have to pay up front for something that was fake. So you didn't lose anything and if you didn't like the service, you could have just quit. So in my opinion, there is clearly something wrong with you to react to this extreme.

The facts you gave are different from my experience. You can contact them, operators at the law firm and not an answering service directly anytime and ask that the attorney or any attorney to call you. What do you expect that you will have the attorney on your speed dial so that he can answer your questions all day? And they do call back and from my experience, 90% of the time, it is within 8 hours. You can also set up a phone appointment. Do you realize that attorneys do have court and other appointments and you have to be a little patient?

If you are in Florida, I highly recommend them because the law firm Glantz and Glantz, the firm under contract with legal shield has lots of lawyers and they do give great value to the little I contribute per month. When you join Legal Shield, you are not hiring $250-300/hr attorneys. But they will answer legal questions and steer you in the right direction. The rest is up to you. Because they are not your attorney, they are not going to write motions for you or appear in court for you devise a strategy for you. But it is well worth the little bit of money. A good analogy is if you have health insurance and you have access to call a nurse and ask questions. The nurse can answer your questions, point you in the direction of more information or the best ways to address the issue and this can be very valuable when you have someone to call on short notice. But the nurse will not treat you. You need to pay someone for that. But a nurse is like a Doctor's assistant, the people you speak to at Legal Shield are actually lawyers and not a legal assistant. So you are talking to the real deal.

If you are outside of Florida, I can't give you an answer because the service would depend a lot on the law firm assigned to your area. I would suggest giving them a try and decide for yourself. Once my question got transferred to a out of state law firm because it involved an Ex that was out of state and they were not as impressive as the firm here in Florida but still ok. If you are dealing with a one time legal issue and you plan on hiring an attorney, just go to free consultations attorneys offer and take a list of questions with you and you may not need a program like legal shield. Legal shield has worked for me because I am often active in different things whether business or personal and I want to be sure I am not skirting the law and when I do have legal issues like some civil matters I had to deal with and decide to represent myself, when I get stuck on a legal question, they can help. It is sometimes like having a tutor you can call anytime.

In the beginning, I will admit, I got frustrated with them because I did not yet know how to ask them questions but once I understood how to phrase questions so that they could answer and not become my attorney which they are not allowed to do, basically I could acquire about everything I needed. I have paid my monthly fee for all these years and for sometimes a couple of years at a time, I never called them and sometimes I called them for months at least 2-3 times a week. But when I did need to speak to one of their many attorneys, the information they gave me was so helpful, when looking at the big picture, it has been well worth it. Once I even lost my business and income (basically broke) and got behind on my bills, and I made sure they were the first I paid because after using their service, I do not ever want to go back to not having an attorney to call when I have a question or concern.

They would be shocked if I told them I gave them this recommendation because I am one of those people who is hard to deal with at times. But they don't know that I know I am this way. They could have dumped me and my litte monthly fee several times over the years and it would have made their life much easier but they never gave up on me. They always did their best and gave me their best. For this, Glantz and Glantz, the firm under legal shield contract in my area deserves a gold metal and a higher metal if there was one.
