 I just want to make it known to other people to be aware of READ! America, Inc. I did something stupid and took a call from this Company and I now have $539.28 of debt for 3 year of magazine subscriptions. They put a lot on emphasis that's it only $3.46 per week equaling $14.98 per month, and you don't have to pay for the last year. I was stupid and did not think fast even to calucate the total cost! Stupid, Stupid!!! I feel this company was very deceptive in there sale. According to the Telemarketing Sales Rules... the rules require disclosure of the TOTAL cost of purchase, received or used the offered goods/services and the total quantity of goods/services the consumer must pay for and receive. The total cost was not revealed until I received their letter later.

They also did not disclosre their "NO Refund Policy" I was not told during the call until I asked if I could cancel incase money is short because I do Child Care. It was then that they informed me I could not cancel my order, because they are prepaying for the magizes. They don't even disclose this on there Letter Head. However, they do disclore they are a BBB Accredited Business which is FALSE! It was revoked in Febraury 2013 due to 34 complaints.

Please except our sincere apologies for this complaint finding its way to your respected website.

We here at R.A.I. strive to eliminate all such complaints.  All customers of Read America receive a copy of their new order via u.s.p.s. priority mail. After confirmation of receipt by the u.s.p.s. we contact our customer one final time to "verify" that everthing on their order is correct and exactly as was agreed.  Read America asks all customers for their permission to "record" their verification call.     Printed clearly on the copy of their order is the total dollar amount of all their payments.  We explain that Read America pays the publishers upfront for their 3 years of service which is the reason that we ask for their commitment, on the recorded verification, that all payments will be made.  Without this promise from the customer, Read America will not finalize the order.  Needless to say, this customer gave Read America their promise/commitment.  It is then that Read America enters the order with the publishers.  Read America makes a point of always thanking our new customers at the end of the verification call, again, for their permission to let us record the verification call.

Regarding the BBB..... After many years associated with the BBB they decided to change their guidelines.  We here at Read America understand that they can do whatever they want to with their organization.  Like most companies, Read America has many of our supplies ordered in advance, such as letterhead with the BBB logo on it.  Read America has nearly exhausted that supply and our new letter head will, unfortunetly, be printed without the BBB logo.  

34 complaints with over 5000 clients on our books over a 3 year span comes out to a customer/BBB complaint ratio of .0022666%, less then a quarter of 1%.   And out of the 34 complaints filed with the BBB all but ONE was resolved.    The BBB has newer stringent guidelines in their grading system. Some of these put Read America into a catagory of "High level of customer dissatisfaction"  Read America is in an industry that unfortunatly has its share of what we call "Bad Guys".  Not alot that we can do about that except keep our standards high.   32 years of delivering exactly as was agreed to our readers, with nothing negative except a handful of complaints that are based more on Buyers Remorse then they are on any kind of legitiment complaint.   By the way,  Read America bends over backwards to work with our customers and we have years and years of data to support this.
