On Dec 27, 2004 I visited this Radio Shack store and inquired about pre-paid wireless cell phone companies. They showed me a few they handled among which was the Tracfone system. I purchased two Tracfones plus 2 400 minutes airtime cards plus accessories for each phone.

Not once during the sales presentation did the sales person inform me that the Tracfone system was fraught with difficulties involving 1)problems with activation; 2) problems with assignment of invalid or long distance phone numbers; and 3)problems with almost non-existent customer support in relation to activation; credit of airtime; and virtually useless call-in numbers.

It is axiomatic that Radio Shack, Inc., has a responsibility to ensure that the companies whose products they sell are reliable, dependable; customer friendly; and willing to ensure customer satisfaction.

I agree with you that Tracfone is a bad product. RadioShack is actually discontinuing it because of the problems you described. When I worked there, I always steered customers away from Tracfone, and instead showed them Cingular's GoPhone.

With that being said, however, you'd definitely avoid incidents like this in the future if you do your own research before you invest in a product.

RadioShack employees are paid minimum wage plus commission, which is pretty high on cellular service activations. They're there to make money and put food on their tables..period. The same is true for other commission-based retailers. They're being pressured by managers and their own financial situations to sell, sell, sell. Most of them are not trained, and are simply thrown out on the sales floor on their first day.

If you go to a non-commissioned store, such as Best Buy, the MANAGERS are the ones making commission. Again, the associates must sell, sell, sell, or they lose hours, or even their jobs. Again, most of these stores don't train their employees.

The above doesn't reflect my personal views; it's just the way retail is. Do your own research from objective sources -- don't rely on a salesperson to spoon feed you the truth about products you're interested in, because most of the time, you won't get it.
