Search TipsI just wanted to address this issue.
It was not a "company policy" that you were advised to enact. It was an unethical practice perpetuated, likely, by your store manager. Protection Plans are an available option for the consumer, but by no means a requirement for purchase.
I would like to point out, that in every Radio Shack there is an "unethical practices" hotline that should be visible at all times in the back room. If at any time you do not feel comfortable to speak with your immediate superiors, you can call that hotline anonymously and it will instigate an investigation. You can not be penalized for doing this.
On the grounds for your termination, however, there are certain standards required of sales associates. As I am sure you are aware of, sales goals are an important day to day measure. If you had repeatedly not met your numbers you likely were issued a write up. Maybe even more than one. If this is the case, then you were fired for refusing to comply or show effort to comply with employee expectations.
While I understand you may have not agreed with the warranty product itself, and not seen any value in it, it is still part of your job to offer it. Ultimately, at the end of the day, if you explain the warranty and all its services correctly and the price, if the customer decides to purchase it... you are not ripping anyone off.
That being said, it seems that what you are describing was to add the warranty on without the customers knowledge... and that is highly unethical. Last year Radio Shack cleaned house, and that unethical business has stopped. Of course, if you still know someone who is employed with the company and they are witnessing this type of behavior still, encourage them to call that hotline.
