On Sunday, November 30, 2008 at approximately 11:30am, we entered the Red Robin Restaurant at the Flatiron Crossing Mall. A couple was in front of us, and was sat by the main host. We were then sat by a hostess/waitress. She attempted to sit us away from the other customers, at the corner of the kitchen and we requested a more suitable, less busy and more quiet location. She huffed at us and sat us further into the room with the other customers.

We waited and waited and waited, other people were sat and waited on at the tables right next to us, but no one ever came to wait on us, even though a waiter stayed at the wait station right behind our seat, and clearly knew we were present. This same waiter waited on all the other tables surrounding us, but refused to wait on us.

The other waiters and kitchen staff began pointing at us and making jokes and laughing very loudly. We finally stood up and left at which time the main host asked us why we were leaving. I told him that no one was waiting on us, and we left.

Why would this happen? Well, here's the rest of the detail: My wife and I are Sephardic Jews. My wife wears a Star of David necklace, and I have a very long kinky beard. Our ancestry is Spanish and Middle Eastern. Clearly, the restaurant staff and owner, (who was present during this entire escapade by the way), hate people of our faith and of our heritage and ethnicity.

Having checked around, I have found that this is not an isolated occurrence at Red Robing Restaurants around the country. They even have lost multi-million dollar law suits for discriminating against employees for their religions.

This behavior is illegal in the Untied States! I call for a nation wide boycott of ALL Red Robin Restaurants until if and when they ever stop discriminating against customers and employees for their religions and ethnicity.

Were you seated in 1939 Germany?

Ok, I wasn't there, so I can't say that you didn't get bad service, but I think that you're looking for racism across the entire company when it just seems like you had a crappy jerk of a server. I highly doubt that a national company like Red Robin would advise discriminatory practices against certain types of customers as it's basically inviting a lawsuit and/or making them lose customers.

#3 UPDATE Employee

Server's perspective

AUTHOR: Amariel44 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, March 18, 2010

First of all, when you enter a busy restaurant and request to be sat at another table, chances are either a.) there is no server for that section, or b.) that section's server was recently sat and needs to take care of the tables that were sat in rotation first.  From a server's perspective, there is absolutely no way you were intentionally ignored.  The server who was waiting tables around you may have been assigned a nearby section, not including your table--we often get "tunnel vision" where we only address the tables that belong to us.  It's a rough truth.

Why didn't you ask a passing server for attention? They cannot fix the problem if they are too busy to realize it exists.  Next time, try not to request a different table during a busy lunch if you want good service.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I also disagree

Red Robin was actually one of the best companies that I have ever worked with.  The mentality and goals that the company work towards is that of diversity and uniqueness.  Although I find your story interesting, and agree that the entire experience you had was unfortunate and disrespectful, I highly doubt that it has anything to do with religion or ethnicity.  The story that you described sounds like nothing more than a waiter or waitress who was not paying attention to their section/was unaware that your table was in their section/didn't realize that you were not the same people who were sitting there moments before etc... (this is probably the reason that you were being guided toward a different table originally).  I suggest the next time that you are waiting for service in a restaurant to speak up, let the manager know that you are upset and accept the free dessert that he will offer you.

I am not stating my ethnicity. But, you cannot claim racism or religious intolerance on one incident. Red Robin is a fine example of diversity actually. Trust me.
