I called Regis Hair Salon in Stoneridge Mall to make an appointment for partial highlights, and at that time I asked how much the price was with this particualr stylist, who had also cut my hair about a month earlier. I was told that her price was $55. At the end of my appointment, however, my total was $75. Not wanting to make a big deal out of it, I left the salon, but called back later to find out why the price had gone up $20.

Now, I really had not intended to make this such a huge issue--I'd just assumed that the extra charge included a blow dry and style or something. But NO, I was told, there is no charge for blow drying OR styling, and the receptionist (who was pretty rude) told me that probably my hair is really thick and long, or probably the stylist did half-head highlights--she even suggested that I'd heard them wrong when I called--that probably the stylist did charge $75, but I'd thought they said $55. (???) Okay, but none of what she told me was making sense. I asked for PARTIAL highlights only, my hair isn't terribly thick, and it's certainly not long--it's chin length! So why the extra charge?? She said she'd have her manager call me the next day to let me know why I was overcharged.

THREE DAYS go by--no call from the salon. I finally called the manager, who told me she'd never even gotten a message about me, but told me PROBABLY the reason I'd been charged so much was because the stylist had done half-head highlights (THAT reason again!) which are more work, more foils, more color, therefore the price is more. Okay, great, but again, I asked for PARTIAL highlights only- so why should I have to pay extra for something I didn't ask for? The manager told me she'd speak to the stylist and call me the next day.

ANOTHER THREE DAYS go by... no phone call. Now, come on-- all I really wanted was an explanation, so why was it SO hard to get a straight answer from this salon? I called back, and spoke with a receptionist who REFUSED TO GIVE ME HER NAME, which just makes the situation seem even more shady, and at that time I told this person that I'd be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

I finally got the name and phone number of the person who handles complaints for Regis, and after two or three messages to her, I got a call back. And she was even more rude than anyone I'd talked to at the salon!!

Keep in mind-- I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHY I WAS CHARGED MORE THAN I WAS QUOTED. Is that so bad? I guess so. Because my hair was highlighted in March, and it's now MAY... and I STILL haven't gotten an explanation, just a "gift" certificate which can only be used at--where else?-- REGIS SALONS-- for $20.00!

My advice: Stay far, far away from Regis Salons! Unless you enjoy being overcharged AND treated rudely!

Why you were "over-charged"

AUTHOR: wecollide - (United States of America)

I am an employee of Regis Corp. as a hairstylist and have worked for them for over 3 years. I am sorry that you were never offered an explanation.

The only person that should be giving you an exact quote on a price is the person that is going to be doing your hair. Not another stylist or the receptionist.  The Receptionist at the salon I work for will tell you what prices will "start at" and to come in for a free consultation for an exact price.

The reason for this is there are so many variables under each job. I assure you this isn't to rip anyone off. For example, if you are getting hilights, an additional color lo light will cost extra (an additional tube of color is used). One persons definition of what they want when getting a "color" could mean a whole head of color plus hilights, where another person just wants a root touch up, and these two prices vary greatly.

before quoting a price I gather all the information I need in a consultaion, determing what methods I will use, and make sure the customer and I are on the same page. I never try to sneak in a charge or charge more than I should.. If the customer doesn't seemed concerned about a price I might not discuss it with them, as sometimes it can be rude to ask "Its going to cost X amount of money, is that OK?"  If they are concerned they usually ask. Your stylist may not have known you were previously quoted, and if you had asked her while she was ringing you up this whole situation could have been solved before it became a problem.

I am not saying the way they went about it was professional, but I just wanted to explain that you probably weren't being ripped off.

This is not the Salons fault

AUTHOR: Katy - (U.S.A.)

There are bad doctors out there, there are bad dentists, there are bad mechanics, there are also bad hair stylists. I don't think we need to make a huge generalization of all the Regis Salons because there is a handful of bad stylists. I currently go to a stylist at Regis and I love her, this was of course going to about 5 other stylists in town trying to find the right one. And for people complaining about the price, I have paid $35-$45 for a shampoo/cut/style at privately owned salons and come out with a horrible cut or color, I even had my hair burned during a perm. It happens, your hair will grow back, look at it as a chance to experiment with some great hair accessories!

I am a former Regis empoyee

AUTHOR: Leatrice - (U.S.A.)

Sorry about your incident. I am a former employee (by choice)of Regis salon. I loved working there, management issues.

Anyway, as far as the partial hi-lites. The way we used to charge is $5 a foil or $45 minimum, not including a haircut or style. If you had it styled, we would add just $5 for short to medium $10 for long. This is only for the time in the chair as it doesn't allow for us to take another customer during that time.

I know sometimes to the customers the prices seem outrageous, but please think of it this way:
If you get paid strictly by commission would you only want to do 1 partial and 3 haircuts for one night? That adds up to $121, but you only get 45% of your commission for the week. That is IF you make more than your hourly rate.

For that 8 hour day of being on your feet and working steady (haircuts, color, towels, sweeping, dusting, stocking shelves, organizing, inventory, disenfecting combs and brushes, filling shampoo and conditioner on back bar, booking appts, checking customers out, etc) you have earned a great big whopping $54.45!

WoooHooo!

That is making commission by the skin of your teeth.

Hairstylists are in the business because they love it. If you get someone who doesn't, you will know. Unfortunately, you get some that will conform to corporate rules. I won't, they were gracious enough to deal with it. I just couldn't ignore my manager anymore, unfortunately.
THEY ARE NEVER SUPPOSED TO QUOTE PRICES OVER THE PHONE!!!!! EVER!!!! That is an absolute NO, NO!! A "start at" price can be given over the phone, but not a quote.

I hope this gives you a little insight. Sorry about being so long winded. I really did love working there. I am sorry you had a sour experience. Don't let it keep you from going again. Just be sure to have them do a consultation as soon as you are in the chair and give you a quote BEFORE the services are started and find out what all is included (haircut, style, etc....)
Good luck.

Anyways you were ripped off.. I am also a Salon

My salon. (shouldn't be in any salon) Hair

Coloring 101 :
Chapter 1: When a client is quoted a price....

HONOR THAT PRICE PEOPLE.

Chapter 2: Product Smoduct!!!

Part 1: Terms and Meanings:
Partial Means - Not Complete
Half Head Means - Not Complete

Q&A:

Q: Why Was I Charged More For Partial or Half whaterver (never heard the terminology)?
A: Because it doesn't take as long but uses more product.

OKAY BACK TO REALITY : BIG TIME BS.

Half Means Not Full Less Time Means Less Product?
Bottom Line You Got Ripped Big Time. That Is unfortunate becase it is hard to regain the trust of a client once they have been screwed by you or someone else. That client will always have that in the back of thier mind, and find it hard to trust other stylist. You should always make it right with your clients at any cost. Prime Example: If someone is unhappy with a service or treatment they tell 10 people. If someone is happy with a service or treatment they tell 3 people. We are here to please. Nothing less should be accepted by yourself as a stylist or a salon owner or manager.
