I have been doing business with them for a few months now and only late once... when I was on vacation for a week.  When I returned I had 100's of missed calls, voicemails, etc and found out they contacted my best friend who texted me saying rent a center has been calling him.  They even told him I was behind on my payments which I believe may be illegal.  I explained I was going to be taking another week off soon and not to worry next time.  They wanted me to set up auto-debits but I declined because my check is USUALLY deposited on Friday, but not always.  I'm not taking the risk of having an overdraft fee when making the payment on Monday is an option.  They understood and it's business as usual until Saturday, August 3rd.  I got out of the ocean, went to my car parked on the seawall, checked my phone and saw I missed a call from them, had a voicemail from "John there at Rent A Center letting me know my account came due today," AND recieved a text alert from my bank stating I had a $127.52 charge.  The time stamp on my iPhone shows it was minutes after the missed call.  I was pretty sure they ran my card without my permission but I opened my Chase app to be sure and there it was in plain english, "127.52 pending to Rent A Center."  Now I can't say for sure John is who initiated the charge but I do know that someone representing Rent A Center committed FRAUD.  They do not have my permission to automatically make payments and never will.  Thank you for reading my RAC rip off report and thanks in advance for anyone who can offer input to help me out with this matter.

To sum up...

AUTHOR: John - ()

1.  You are "usually" on time, but you were late on payments.

2.  You were late because you were on vacation (in the real world, bills have an annoying habit of coming due at the same time every month whether you are on vacation or not.)

3.  You are planning to take ANOTHER week off very soon, so you thought you should tell Rent A Center "don't worry."  As in, "don't worry, I'm going to be late again, but I'll pay when I'm back from vacation."

4.  Your credit is in the toilet, but you are taking one week off from work after another.

5.  You have an iPhone.  No money, no credit, but an iPhone.  Great priorities there.

6.  You think that your uncertain pay schedule should be Rent A Center's problem, not yours.

Did I miss anything?

If you don't respond, I'll assume that you are just on your fifth vacation this week.  And that your creditors will just have wait patiently until you get back from the beach.

Let me see if I get this straight...

AUTHOR: John - ()

You rented from Rent A Center, but after a few months you were late on a payment.  You consider it "harrassment" when Rent A Center contacts you about fulfilling your contract.  Then you "helpfully" let them know that hey, you'll be away again soon so you'll be late again, don't bother to call.  Rent A Center wants to sign up you for regular auto payments, but you don't like that deal because you don't always get paid on time and you don't want overdrafts.

You are the reason Rent A Center exists.  You have a crappy history when it comes to making payments, so Rent A Center is your store of last resort.  And now you are screwing up your credit with them, too.  Your next stop, once Rent A Center cuts you off, will be handing the title of your car to Cash Stop for a payday loan.

Do yourself a favor- admit that you aren't ready for this level of responsibility, and give whatever you are renting back.  Get your act together, build a savings fund, and try again in a few years.  First step- stop blaming your creditors for your horrible lack of money management skills.

#3 UPDATE Employee

Hi there...

AUTHOR: Jana R. - ()

Hi – I work at Rent-A-Center and I’m very sorry to hear about your recent experience with one of our stores in Galveston. We take issues regarding fraud very seriously, and what you’ve described is definitely not the way we want our customers to be treated or their accounts to be handled. I know our Customer Care team would be very interested in hearing more about this, you should give them a call at 1-800-422-8186 so they can address the situation. Thanks, and hope this helps!

Is there any contract

AUTHOR: MochaG - ()

Have you signed any contract with them? If so, you need to get it and look at the contract again about their rights (usually not yours because contract is usually bias to one side). There may be a clause stating that they have the right to charge your bank account on the day when the payment is due. If so, they are not committing a fraud and you are out of luck.

By the way, you are supposed to pay on time every single payment regardless. You said that you have been renting the car for a "few" months and had 1 late payment. The late payment (even 1 time) is a very negative record. For you, it is not a big deal because it benefits yourself. For them, it is a very risky business dealing with you because they can no longer trust you. If the debt goes to collection, they may lose even more money. That's why they want to ensure that the debt could be paid before it goes to collection.

Your story does not make sense also about your friend gets calls. If your friend texted you about getting calls from this company, why didn't you call them back once you get the message? It seems that you do NOT want to contact them because you may be behind on the payment. Also, you do not have money but seem to have vacation here and there. Hopefully, you know your priority and see things far ahead rather than right here right now.
