My local Brookes pharmacy was bought out by rite-aid yet I continued to use them because of the convenience of rite being located 1 block from my home. I was getting a med that started out costing me 39.00 per 3 pills. Thereafter, each month the price went up and in a few months the price was now 69. per 3 pills. I asked the pharmacist why the raises in prices or why each time I come forr the meds the price is raised. I was told the manufacturer of the drug is raising the prices so I called the manufacturer. The manufacturer told me that they were selling the pills to rite aid for only 3.00 per pil and that rite aid at their own discretion has been raising the prices. Think about this: they are paying 9.00 for three pills and selling them to me for 69.00 so that is a whopping 60.oo profit. Also, they offer a sweepstakes via phone survey, but how come no one ever wins anything from it?

What Should You Have Been Charged?

I know this is a difficult pill to swallow (pun intended), but it's not really a rip off. A pharmacist makes at minimum $80,000 a year. The techs who must be employed to help the pharmacist average $35,000 a year. Add in to that the cashiers and the simple operating costs to run the pharmacy, and you have to consider where this money comes from. What you pay for your medication goes to cover all of these expenses plus give the company a profit.
The manufacturer very well may be increasing the prices, forcing the pharmacy to raise their cash prices as well.
Many people don't realize that you CAN price shop for medication. Call around to different pharmacies in your area with your script in hand and find out what the cash price is for the medication. As long as it's not a controlled substance most pharmacies will be happy to give you the estimated cost.
