In December 2005 we traveled to Cancun for a vacation at the Royal Sunset. While there we attended a presentation on owning a timeshare, we ended up buying into one. While doing this we asked questions about the agreement. We asked about the termination clause that states you have five days to rescind your offer. We were told because we were purchasing a pre-owned unit this clause was not in effect. While there on vacation we realized we did not have the funds to go thru with this agreement but because we were told that we did not have the five day termination period, we decided to enjoy the vacation and go home.

Five days later we go home and begin looking over the agreement and doing some research and find that we were lied to. We wrote them a letter, by registered mail, stating we were terminating the agreement. In a few days we were contacted by e-mail and phone that they did not accept our right to terminate the agreement and that we need to send them the payments due, I refused and was told that we would be put in collection. We are not asking for our down payment back just to be out of the agreement according to the agreement, but we are being harassed. We were also told if we complained to the government no one would care, that is when I decided to write this letter.

A company (Resort Management International in Mobile Al.) called us and wrote March 30, 2006 telling us that we were being put into collection by the Royal Sunset.

Also before we went into the timeshare sales meeting I told them I was very sick, I had been severely burned, handicapped and disfigured the year before and that I had cancer, I was blind in one eye, had my hip replaced and gall bladder removed, so I was not up to this. This may not be an issue but I feel I was taken unfair advantage of and I am not the only one they are lying to

This whole process is very high-pressure sales and when we asked to come back later we were high pressured into staying. While I understand that we have to be responsible for our own actions, it is hard to make informed decisions when you are being misled, this practice is done over and over to people who are at their most vulnerable, relaxing, eating and drinking more than they are used to.

The Internet has thousands of people posting complaints and asking for help to get their money back. The government should look into this practice of its citizens being taken advantage of. Also the major news media outlets should look at this to help warn people of the danger of being taken advantage of while on vacation.
