I awoke this morning, checked my computer, and found that my Skype account had been charged $8.30 for a call to Michigan, resulting in Skype trying to access my credit card account to 'refresh' my account with more money.  Fortunately, it was a closed credit card and their charge did not go through.  I chatted online with a Skype representative "Jackie" who claimed my account must have been hacked and it was my responsibility.  I further reported that it occured while my computer was shut down and while I was sleeping.  I gave her the called number and asked if Skype would investigate, and she told me in so many words not to expect a Skype response.  Case closed, and I am out the $8.30.  I called the same fraudulent number, 231-613-0295  in Michigan, and it immediately went to a message which stated that: "I'm sorry but the person you called has  a voice mailbox that has not been set up yet.  Goodbye."  I think Skype knows full-well what is going on....it is called planned account depletion...and it appears that it is most likely perpetrated by Skype or someone surreptitiously contracted by Skype.  I think they need to be investigated.

#1 Consumer Comment

I too was cheated

AUTHOR: MLS582 - (United States of America)

I used the free Skype, for near a week then uninstalled it, 3 years ago, I never gave them my card number, Skype has not been installed in my computer for near 3 years, how they got my card I do not know. I assume someone used my card number for themselves, as you see from my picture, it zero.

Searching the internet I found several other people with the same or near the same problem, being charged for service they did not authorize. I looked at my bank statement and found that Oct. 6th 2011 I was charged twice $13.70 = $27.40 USD.

One person wrote its auto-pay, they charge people who still use there service, they bill you if they know your card number, automatically, subscription service. It wrote if your one of those, and you forget to cancel, they still charge you. There is a place to email about refund, tells you how, yet does not exist. Several people wrote they will refuse to refund or will explain its not their fault for unauthorized charges.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

Microsoft owns Skype now

AUTHOR: exileslovesong - (United States of America)

Microsoft owns Skype now, and since Skype has been a money-loser since it's inception, it is under pressure from new owners to get profitable, ASAP. This includes, possibly, dumping those money-losing "top-up" accounts that aren't regular monthly subscription accounts. Skype loses money on accounts that are just a cash balance that the customer adds money to at their leisure.  So, they may be "churning" these like they did you hoping you'd either quit Skype altogether, or up your account to "unlimited" service. Get It?  Now I'm worried because I have a 'loser' acct., also!
