at its best!

I've been feverishly applying to jobs for months.  I got a call today from Chris at SMGI, a sales and marketing company, saying his manager saw my resume on Monster and wondered if I would be interested in a position there.  I thought this was a little odd since I'm getting a PhD in Molecular Biology, but I had also previously applied for positions in management consulting and thought this might be similar.  I mentioned the consulting interest, and he sort of skipped over that and went straight to scheduling me for an interview.

What should have REALLY tipped me off are the following facts: 1) Despite scheduling me for an interview with his manager, he never told me the manager's name. 2) He didn't mention a specific position that the interview was for, and kind of made it sound like I was driving 2 hours round-trip for an informational interview - which can be done on the phone. 3) He gave no information whatsoever about what the company does.

I Googled the company and found their generic website, full of buzzwords and pictures of people in suits, and no clear information about what kind of clients they have or what kind of business they do or what the company is like to work for.  More search results just returned pages upon pages of job postings.  I found no relevant company information on their LinkedIn profile, and they weren't even listed on Glassdoor.  This confused me, so just for fun I Googled the company's name with "scam" after it, and found the Ripoff Reports.

After reading about SMGI and CXN Inc (which, according to their Facebook page, has the same address), I decided to give Chris one more chance and called him back.  I told him I couldn't find much information on the website about the company or the position, and asked him for information.  He told me to go to the website.  I told him the website I found just had pictures of people in suits, and not any actual information.  He said, "that must not be our website", and gave me the address - same website.  Finally I just sucked it up and asked straight up: "Googling your company comes up with a few web pages describing the position as selling Verizon packages door-to-door.  Is this what the position entails?".  He actually owned up to it, saying, "that's one of our current projects, but not necessarily the project you would have.  It may not even involve Verizon".  So I asked him to give me another example of a project the company might do - not even naming client names, just WHAT DO YOU DO - and he told me to look at the Careers tab of the company's website, and that was the end of the conversation.  Soooo, you schedule people for interviews, but you can't even tell them what your company does?

I looked at the Careers tab of the website, and the positions are all very vague.  The lowest position is described as, you learn how the company works.  The higher positions all say, you teach lower employees how the company works.  And clicking on "Apply now" doesn't give you any specific open positions with applicant requirements and job responsibilities - just a generic form for you to input your contact information and resume.

In conclusion, I'm not showing up to this "interview".

Sounds like a typical door to door sales job

AUTHOR: Giselle - (USA)

Probably, you would have gone to a 5 minute interview where questions would have been dodged. You would have received a call later that day congratulating you that you had made it to the second round and told to dress professionally for the next day.  You would have then spent the next day crammed in a crappy car with employees, going to door to door and harassing people to buy something they don't want.  You would be lured with incredible offers of getting rich by having your own office, but in reality, you would be a strictly commission only job, working ridiculous hours and not getting any reimbursement for gas or food. These door to door sales companies, like Kirby, Scentura, Cutco, Cydor, Vector, etc, will hire ANYONE that has a pulse.  You can check out how these companies work by researching them here at ripoffreport, or do a google search on sports marketing scams, door to door sales scam, entry-level management scams, etc.
