As reported here before, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II from Boost Mobile in September. Suddenly, the charging port stopped working. A call to Boost yielded the astounding information that they "Have no phones to send as replacements." They directed me to contact Samsung, as this phone was still under warranty. Samsung told me to send it to them, and I did. The phone was returned to me today with this message:
Your phone is beyond repair.
Fail description: Gross electromechanical damage--abuse
Labor: Void warranty
Parts: Void warranty
I called Samsung and spoke with Lanay, who explained that, (as the previous person wrote), the pins from the charging port had "lifted from the motherboard," and that the cost to repair the phone would exceed its value. She further explained that this happens because people use a non-Samsung charger (I didn't), or they "push the plug in too hard," (I didn't). I asked how it was possible that I had caused this, and explained to her that I've been repairing and building computers since the 90s, and I am completely aware of how to charge a cellphone. She repeated her script. I asked for her supervisor, since she and I were going nowhere with this.
Simon came on the line. Same script, different idiot. Same question from me, as in how did I cause this damage? Answer: "We can't speculate about this." I pointed out that stating that my phone was grossly damaged due to "abuse" was, in fact, speculation. I also pointed out it was more likely a manufacturer defect. He stated there were "No known issues regarding such a defect." Really? A web search revealed quite the reverse. Problems with the charging port on the Galaxy models are rampant.
So. Boost won't help me. Samsung won't help me. And my insurance for the phone probably won't help me because Samsung has declared this to be caused by me.
Next stop: VISA. Chargeback to rights are immediate in cases where merchandise is defective, which this phone clearly is.
Second stop: The BBB. People think they have no teeth, but this is not so. Also, even if they can't help with a dispute, at least there is a record of complaint against both Samsung and Boost (the cellphone provider that sells phones, but alleges they don't have any phones).
I feel like I've fallen down the rabbit hole.
