Sanford Brown Insitute - Landover Campus, Medical Assistant Program ripped me off! I have been unable to graduate because there was no follow-up with one of the doctors I was on externship with.

The first doctor I was assigned to for externship was verbally abusive, had me performing work not related to my clinical and classwork, such as vacuuming floors and emptying garbage cans.

When I complained to Mrs. Dearing, Externship Coordinator at Sanford Brown Institute, she pretended to understand and told me to hold on. After three days with this abusive doctor, I told her I could not go back to his office because of the abuse. Mrs. Dearing then assigned me to a second doctor who was more professional and I then went on to complete my externship with this doctor. Or so I thought. I found out two months after I thought I had graduated that Sanford Brown has me listed as withdrawn and never actually graduating.

Every time I call Mrs. Dearing or the recently installed President, Mrs. Greta Bonaparte, to complain about not being credited for the externship I completed for 3 days with the abusive doctor, they say that because he never submitted timesheets for my three days or work, I cannot graduate.

Originally, Mrs. Dearing said that the first doctor only later submitted timesheets for two days instead of three. She and the former President indicated that she would sign off on my other eight hours because they were aware the doctor did not send in the last timesheet. Now, three or four months later, they are saying I never completed any hours with the first doctor although I have documentaton to the contrary.

One day when I speak with Mrs. Dearing and President Bonaparte, they claim I owe eight hours on my externship because of the doctor's lack of cooperation and the next day, they claim I owe 30 hours, and the next day they claim I owe two weeks.

This lack of monitoring of their students by Sanford Brown Institute in Landover while their students are on externship has caused me financial hardship because I cannot get my certification, graduation certificate or a job. A whole year of strugging financially to complete all my classes and externship and to now be denied graduation status because they did not follow-up and help me out during externship.

Ignorance in bliss??

AUTHOR: Lisa - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, August 11, 2012

Dear John.  Your attitude and lack of respect is typical of the treatment that students at SB have to endure from their instructors.  Your statements and the ranting you did in your post shows your ignorance.  This "attitude" is commonly found at Sanford Brown from the instructors.  If you were to check yourself and change YOUR attitude students my follow.  In my opinion this school is a joke.  The students are rude, the instructors are unprofessional and the administration is an absolute joke.  In the future if you want to be taken serious, use your own name. (I did mine) If you are proud of the institution that you work for then you should not have to hide behind a alias.

Externship hours

AUTHOR: Successful - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 26, 2008

It is to my understanding, that once students complete their coursework for the program, they are then eligible for their externship. Students are given a complete orientation with regards to the rules, policies and procedures. I know for a fact that all externship students are required to turn in weekly time sheets to their externship coordinator to track their time. Students have an obligation to keep copies of their time sheets as well. The time sheets are posted and the originals are kept in the registrars office. Students need to take an active role in managing and tracking their time and not leaving life depending decisions up to other people. Unfortunately, if there is no source documents to prove the missing time, the registrar cannot credit time to anyone without proof. This would be suicidal when audit time comes. Chalk it up as a lesson learn, be proactive in your dealings!

school location? does it have something to do with it?

Most of the complaints that I have read on this website for SBI are from either New Jersey, Philadephia or Maryland. I am from Massachusetts and I am attending the Sanford Brown Institute in Springfield and have seen only the opposite of what is being claimed by people on this site. I read several times in these complaint about quality of students another possible issue.

Your entire rebuttal was pure generalization of your students and trying to lump me in the bunch.

JOHN, YOU NEED TO THINK THINGS THROUGH

John, maybe you had to deal with students who needed to be motivated and told to follow through on every task but I am not one of them. I had a grade point average of 3.8. I was voted "most likely to succeed" during my graduation ceremony given by SBI prior to my externship. I was extremely motivated and determined to get good grades and do everything I needed to do to complete the medical assistant program because I love the medical field.

Regarding your comment about the doctor not liking me because of my individual behavior, if that was the case, why didn't I have a problem with the second doctor I was assigned to for five weeks to complete my externship. The first doctor was verbally abusive and gave me duties such as vacuuming and emptying garbarge cans and little else. How would these duties help me with my phlebotomy skills and other clinical skills I needed to practice during my externship? However, with the second doctor I was assigned to, they gave me duties that allowed me to practice my phlebotomy and other clinical skills I learned in school. I received excellent evaluations from the second doctor and I am able to use them as a reference.

Your entire rebuttal was pure generalization of your students and trying to lump me in the bunch. But you have no knowledge of the hard work and determination that I put into my grades and externship.

In reference to your second comment about "stop being lazy and go get a job and . . . certification." I have my phlebotomy certification and I have already taken a certification exam for medical assistant but cannot get my results because SBI said I did not complete my externship when I actually did. Also, I go out everyday looking for a job at state employment agencies, temporary agencies, newspaper listings, networking etc. So much for your theory that I am lazy.

You have no knowledge of my particular situation at SBI and therefore should not steorotype me as underachieving and lazy. Which is obviously the low opinion you hold of your students.

Lastly, I am not a "victim", I am a consumer who was ripped off by SBI.

Think things through

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

After reading yours and all others about Sanford Brown Institute, I can say after working here that this (the education private 'for profit' schools) is legitimate. The instructors i know are very intense and have alot of knowledge in their industry.

Private schools are for profit, which means they want to make a profit on the bottom line - CEC is a public company therefore has to follow certain guidelines not only to the public (NASDAQ under CECO), but also to standards of US Dept of Education higher education standards. As I have read and watched the 60min story on CBS, i found that as an employee, there is a sales quota and it has to be met, as the ex-employees stated and it is very very stressful! There are compliance Directors to make sure within that school they have all the required information on a student that meets state and federal guidelines. But keep in mind - YOU initially contacted the school and showed an interest, as a school JUST like community colleges and universities, they help with the admission process as well as showing what the school offers and can at anytime talk to the current students or faculty to ask or inquire life like as a student here. Bottom line is that those who are mad about CEC and everything else - you are to blame - you are a bad consumer who did no research!! If i want to go and buy a car, or a big screen t.v, i research, i price shop and i see consumer complaints about the product and company. As a student myself - I personally would go to a community college then transfer to a university that has a good reputation. We have plenty of local Dr offices and hospitals that love the students from SBI and then there are those who would not re-use SBI because of the students individual behavior. You represent SBI just like when you graduate, you want to state you went to SBI and feel proud of the school YOU chose. Dont play the blame game! If you dont have a job - stop being lazy and go get one! if you are not certified, get certified or do the steps required to get it done. Life is hard, EVERYONE knows that - stop being a victim and people wont treat you like one. I am looked at loosing my job if i dont produce, that is a lot of stress every night to go home with. I have to literally babysit potential students to get required documents in, to go see financial aid to show up for class - for crying out loud - you are in school to do a PROFESSIONAL JOB, start acting like an adult if you want to get into an adult profession!

All in all, I personally would not pay $13k to go to school here, but I also dont want to be in the medical feild but i DO appreciate those who do like and want it. I also want someone with the education + hands on experience that career schools give to students. I had a girl take my blood the other day and was a Sanford Brown Graduate and loved the school and wants to return to further her education in Sonography. So remember- OPINIONS ARE LIKE BUTTS -EVERYONE HAS ONE! just keep that in mind!
