Pros: You don't have to buy clothes.. they give you uniforms!
Cons: Too many to mention in this little space.
Want a life? Don't apply. You will work (on the clock) between 12 and 14 hours a day. Now think about that. If you clock in at 8am.. you must clock out by 10pm. That is 14 hours. Don't forget drive time to and from work.
So if you don't get home until 10:30pm.. how long do you get to spend with your family before going to bed?
This will be every day.. 5 days a week. Your schedule could be Tuesday through Saturday.. or it could be Monday thru Friday. So the only time you have off would either be Saturday and Sunday.. or Sunday and Monday.
Really... forget the weekdays.. there isn't even enough time to watch any TV.
Now.. if you are sick on a particular day.. you will have two options. 1. Don't get paid for that day. or 2. Make up the day on one of your days off. Hopefully you won't get sick for more than one day. Otherwise they only way to get paid is to use up your vacation days. You only get 10 of those a year.
If you are one of the guys or gals that get assigned a route that is classified as an overnight route.. that means you will be required to spend the night in a motel. Yes.. the company will pay for your room.. however the per Diem use to be $15 a day for food.. but they recently dropped it to $10 a day for food. So if you get one of these routes.. you could be spending your own money for food and then two weeks later get reimbursed..
Also.. you could be away from home up to 3 nights per week.
Pay: If you drive your route.. you will get $50 per day for each day that you drive. If you meet the metrics.. they will give you an additional $50 for that day. But here are the three Metrics you must reach:
1. See 70% of your customers within their scheduled 2 hour time window. If your customer has a time window between 9am and 11am.. and you see that customer at 8:59am... Sorry.. you missed their window. If you see the customer at 11:01am... Sorry.. you missed their window. Out of every 10 customers you see in a day.. you must see 7 of them at their prescribed time. If at the end of the day, you do not meet this metric.. you will NOT get the additional $50.
2. See 95% of all your scheduled customers. That means for every twenty customers you are scheduled on that day.. you can only miss one of them. If at the end of the day, you do not meet this metric.. you will NOT get the additional $50.
3. See 90% of your customers at their assigned location. That means that each and every customer you have is plotted on a GPS map that you carry around. If you see your customer in any other place other than their assigned GPS location.. this can only happen once in ten customers you see... then at the end of the day, if you do not meet this metric.. you will NOT get the additional $50.
Because every Schwan's driver has their Hand Held Computer (HHC) the company knows where you are at all times. I noticed that one driver reported here that he only works 8-10 hours a day. That was during the time when they did not know where you were. I parked in one place for an hour one day to do some door knocking.. and they called me wanting to know why my truck was parked in one place for so long. You will never be able to "go home" and sit around for 4 hours doing nothing.
Here is the biggest problem... you don't know if you hit your metrics or not. And you won't know until payday.
If you get paid less than $500 for the week you worked.. you then know you missed your metrics. That happened to me 6 times. Oh.. btw.. they don't tell you which of the 3 metrics you mess up on.
So all it takes is you missing one of the 3 metrics.. and you will loose your $50 for that day.
Commission: When you sell anything less than $899 worth of food to customers in a day.. your commission will be 1% of your total sales.. less the $1.75 delivery fee you are charging your customer. So if you sold $500 worth of food to 35 customers.. you would take 35 X 1.75 or $61.25 off of the $500.. or $438.75. You now get paid 1% of the $438.75 or $4.39 in commission. Of course if you sold $899 worth of food to the same 35 customers.. you would take $899 - $61.25 or $837.75 and 1% of that is a whopping $8.38 in commission.
The commission structure is as follows:
If you sell less than $100 in a day.. you will lose your $50 Metric bonus pay.
If you have what is known as a build day.. you will lose your $50 Metric bonus pay.
So.. $100 to $899 = 1%
if you sell $900 to $999 in one day.. you will get 2.5%.
if you sell $1000 to $1099 in one day.. you will get 3.5%
If you sell $1100 to $1199 in one day.. you will get 5%
if you sell $1200 to $1299 in one day.. you will get 7%
if you sell $1300 to $1399 in one day.. you will get 8%
if you sell $1400 to $1499 in one day.. you will get 9%
if you sell $1500 to $1599 in one day.. you will get 10%
Remember.. this is NET sales. Now I will tell you this. Management gets excited when you make over $1000 a day.
I had a boss that if I reported less than a $1000 for a day.. would not even talk to me. At least if I did over $1000 he would text me with a "good job".
If you loose $50 because you did not hit your metric.. you would need to sell $1100 worth of food to make up that $50 you lost.
So lets look at your net hourly rate.
If you make your metrics.. and drive your route.. and lets say.. get commission and you made $28,000 in a year.. your hourly rate is:
14x5= 70 hours a week.. times 52 weeks in a year = 3,640 hours in a year. Now take $28,000 and divide it by 3,640 and your net hourly rate is: $7.69 per hour.
Now everyone thinks.. hey.. I can sell $1100 worth of food to customers in a day... I know I did. Problem is when you knock on your customer's door.. they don't always buy from you. You see them every two weeks. If the kids have a birthday.. they spent their money on them.. and let you slide until the next two weeks. I had customers that bought every two weeks.. like clock work. Unless... they were not at home. You are totally dependent on the two things. 1. The customers are home.. and 2. If they are.. they want to buy something today.
And yes.. if your customer is not home.. you do have the opportunity to try to go back and see them later to hopefully catch them at home... only if you have the time to do it. If you are seeing 80 customers in a day.. believe me.. you are going going going to just try and see them all. Not much time for call backs.
Now if you could... sell at least 1,100 every day.. for the entire 5 days a week and 52 weeks a year.. that would be about $39,000. Divide that by 3,640 hours and you would then make $10.71 an hour. I don't know anyone at Schwans that was making $39,000 a year except maybe management. I was hired at a job for $38,000 a year and only work 40 hours a week.. not 70. I am home by 6pm every night.. not 11:30pm. If I am sick.. I really have sick pay.
And last.. the weather. Oh the nasty, cold, rainy, snowy, wind blowing, hail stinging weather. Or just the opposite. The hot, burning, exhausting, over heated, dry mouth weather. Then there is also day and night. Light and dark. When the sun goes down.. it gets colder and darker. Very hard to find address on the homes when you can't see in the dark. And all day long you are sticking your hands into a huge freezer on the back of your truck that is about 20 - 40 degrees BELOW ZERO! If you have never had your hands get cold... I will tell you... It HURTS! Sure.. we wear gloves... but it can still penetrate even them depending on how long you spend in the freezer looking for product. Unfortunately they do not stock the truck the same every day. Lots of hunt and seeking going on. Oh.. and if you get one of the older trucks.. where they put the product in cardboard boxes and then stack them on top of each other three wide and two high.. looking for the right product can be very time consuming. And when you get behind.. and start missing your time windows.. then you start worrying about loosing the $50.
So.. they also require you to find at least 2 new customers a day. That means going and cold calling and knocking on doors... day and night. They require a certain percentage of your customers must give you their e-mail address.. and they must order on line. They push and push and push.
Do you get free food? NOPE.. only if they give it to you in your meetings that happen every week. Taste testing. Oh.. btw.. if you decide to purchase Schwans food.. they make you pay the $1.75 delivery fee even if you pick up the food in the depot.
This has honestly been the worst company I have ever worked for. Never have I received a paycheck with them giving me an accounting of how they came up with my commission... Never. They don't let you know how they figured out your commission. I have had many commission type jobs and all of them have given me a report that tells me how they figured out my commission. NOT this company!
Advancement?? Raises?? Not gonna happen. Every driver gets paid the same... no matter how long you worked for the company. Follow a Schwan's truck around sometime and then go ask the customers how many Schwans drivers have they had? You won't believe the turn over! And there is a reason for the turn over!
Be prepared for lots and lots and lots of rules. New rules seem to happen every week. We drivers use to wonder how we are suppose to actually do our job with all the additional things they want you to do.
