Hello. I was hired by schwans on January 22, 2008. I would like to warn current and possible future employees of this company Watch Your Back and Don.t MAke A Mistake. Six weeks after being hired we started a contest for signing up new customers. On March 25, 2008, i signed up 5 or 6 new customers at a bank. I inadvertently signed them as "employees" since they worked at a business.

In my training with schwans which was a joke after the first week, i was never told that the employee button only was to be used when signing up schwans employees. By using this button, without knowing what i was doing i gave these employees a schwans employee discount on their purchase. On March 29, 2008 i was pulled into the local depots gm's office and fired for "falsifying company records" and giving customers illegal discounts. In addition to wanting you to work slave hours for little pay and trying to get us to push unwanted products on customers apparantly they have a zero tolerence policy for a new employee making an honest mistake.

So my advice to all schwans employees or anybody considering a career with schwans is WATCH YOUR BACK and DON'T EVER MAKE AN HONEST MISTAKE. It could cost you your job and make it very hard for you to gain another position with another company.

I worked for schwans for many years, and can remember doing the same exact thing, it is very easy and common mistake, especially with no more training than your given All schwans is worried about is shoving you through the basics, putting you in a truck, and adding up how many route days than can get out of you I can remember when i did it i asked the lgmand was told he wasnt sure what happened he was notified of it from marshall and that i should call 888schwans and ask them, and good luck !!!

#7 UPDATE Employee

I made the same mistake

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, April 12, 2009

I havn't been fired yet as my LGM was with me the day I tried to set up a group stop at a business. I never got the so called 8 week training that I keep hearing about. I went out with another CSM for about 3 days and was thrown to the sharks on the fourth day. I did exactly the same thing the original person in this report did.. not on purpose.. but because of the lack of training. I have worked many places where I was given an employee number.. so on that assumption.. which may be my downfall... I entered the same employee number for each person in the stop.. Good thing I didnt sign a bunch of group stops up for service or I think I would have been fired myself. I also thank my LGM for catching what I was doing before it happened again and explained what I was doing wrong. I believe the original complaint made an honest mistake Like I made.. Mistakes are human.. we all make them... To lose your job over an honest mistake because of bad training practices should be illegal. Somehow I think the LGM in this situation placed the blame on the new guy to save his own tail from being canned.

I don't understand how you can do this.

In order to create the employee discount you have to put the employee number into the HHC (Hand Held Computer). Each employee has a specific 6 digit number assigned to them. In order to give each person the discount you had to have entered an employee number in for each of them. This was not a simple mistake but it appears to be a calculated one.

I worked for schwans for about 2 years. the best thing that I did was to quit and get another job. this is not a family friendly company IMO. 14 to 15 hour days not counting accounting and money justifying time are the rule. they wanted me to do this 6 days a week. I got a life and went to work elsewhere. better money and less hours. no wonder they have to advertise on the back of their trucks for help.

It may have been a mistake.....

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 31, 2008

...but you did make it.

The biggest thing against you is that you started to work for them on January 22nd, but signed up these people on March 25th. It is hard to believe that in that about 8 week period you never signed up a customer, were not instructed how to do it, or never learned on your own by watching other employees.

Unauthorized discounts in the eyes of business is at the same level as theft. They probably know it was a mistake. As they only fired you and did not have you arrested(and yes I have seen people arrested for doing this intentionally). So the reasons they gave you are valid grounds for termination, no RipOff here.

If you honestly feel that the hours were "slave hours" for "little pay", and you had to "push unwanted products", perhaps they did you a favor by firing you. The best thing you can do is use this as a learning experience in your future jobs.

Think About It

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 31, 2008

That's why it's called an "EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT". It may have been honest, but it WAS a stupid mistake. Giving unauthorized discounts to family and friends is one of the main reasons companies fire people. You've only worked there a month and you've already cost them additional money and embarrassment. They're gonna look real stupid going back to those people and telling them they can't have the discount OR if the deceide to let them keep the discount, it could cost them thousands of dollars in lost revenue. I would have fired you too. With the number of posts from Schwan drivers about how bad it is to work for this company, they probably did you a favor.

But you made the "mistake"

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 30, 2008

People get fired for making mistakes all the time. It's not a ripoff. And how can you allegedly sell 'unwanted products' when apparently 5 or 6 (how can you not know how many if you made the sales?) did want the product? Or, did they only want the product if you gave them a discount which is what got you in trouble?
