In July 2011, I purchased a Kenmore over-range microwave, model 721.85032010, manufactured in May 2011. One week after the warranty expired, it stopped heating and the turntable stopped working. A microwave should last longer than one year.

I requested a replacement in writing, but have not gotten a reply. I tried calling the local Sears store, but it is no longer in business.

After reading numerous consumer complaints, I am not optimistic that this situation will be rectified. In years past, Sears was a reputable company that sold quality products and it was that reputation that prompted me to purchase this microwave from Sears.  If this is not satisfactorily and expeditiously resolved, Sears will never get my business again.

Planned Obsolescence

AUTHOR: bdmc - (United States of America)

Yes, the warranty has expired. I think any reasonable person who buys a microwave and pays to have it installed expects it to last more than one year. Unfortunately, with Sears products there is a trend for products to stop working within a short period of the warranty expiration.

Not only is it irresponsible to manufacture/sell a microwave that lasts a year plus one week for economic reasons, it is a waste in other ways.  For example, consider the environmental impact.  If everyone who purchases a microwave has to replace it annually, how many microwaves would there be in a landfill?  How environmentally responsible is that?

I think consumers have the right to be informed about planned obsolescence so they can make intelligent decisions about purchases.  Or perhaps I should immediately purchase another Sears microwave along with the extended warranty/maintenance plan so they can perpetuate their consumer exploitation, make a profit, and make "valuable" contributions to the local landfill...  No thanks!  Sears will not get my dollar vote.

But it's out of warranty and you know that.  I agree it should last longer, but it didn't.
