I was an employee of Service Magic for a total of three weeks. I agree with the complaints that the leads were very bogus. I would receive a list of leads that were over a year old and the contact had told them they were not interested many times. It is the policy of Service Magic to put all leads back into the system to call back in 30 days. Even when I tried to explain the prospect said they were not interested the supervisor would repeat every 30 days like some kind of robot. They have constant ads in the local paper as the turnover is very high. I just could not push something down somebody's throat constantly once they said they were not interested. The only key word for prospects is to say" put me on the do not call list". Management hates this but they have to honor it. They believe raising the commision will help the turnover, but the managers have no Human Resources skills and it shows

Hey I have worked here for a little bit, and I love it. I have so many great conversations with Contractors and Service Pros. The fact is that one month someone might have all the work they need and not need anymore, but who's to say that their situation isn't going to be different down the road. The fact is that very few people tell the truth to someone on the phone. So yeah we follow up and that's how we approach them as a follow up to see if they are looking for more work.

We have about 300,000 job requests every month and if we don't have contractors that can do the work then Homeowners wont come back to get future work completed. We screen all of the pros and make sure that they are able to legally work, are properly licensed and are insured to do that work. We also have a profile page created for them so their customers can post a request, so guess what if you do bad work no one will want you to do there's.

So we stress the importance of reviewing the contractors and if they are continually screwing things up then we don't want them and they will probably go out of business anyway. Now some of you may ask why we provide the lead to 3-4 different contractors, to answer, if you were having a house built or even a maid would you want 1 choice, NO!

We have over 50,000 contractors on our site to take requests and not one of them has a long term contract (so they can cancel at any time if they want) So why would 50,000 companies pay us for leads if they didn't have to? If a contractor is having difficulty getting work through us, they have a website to look through with information to help them close business and they have Account Managers to help them as well.

As far as the job itself, it is a calling center, we do sell over the phone, the fact is this type of work is not for everyone cause not everyone is happy to talk to a "telemarketer" and somepeople cannot take rejection (that's life.) So people quit, some can't sell very well, and for everyone who isn't familiar with sales, those who can sell really well do it because they believe in the product and they have seen the results of who they help. And Terry you were there for 3 weeks why would they let you screw up a brand new lead and possibly that contractors business if they knew you couldn't give them the right information and be able to sign them up properly if at all, you need to sell.

LIFE IS SALES FOLKS, as i have said before if your not a virgin you've been a salesman (chauvinist i know, but truth) Some people give sales a bad rep, but the majority are great people.

So hey the only way for me to really prove to anyone that the service works for the homeowner and the contractors is to submit your own request for work to be completed around your house. Talk to the contractors about the work you need done, so you can make your own decision. (its free so why wouldn't you?)
