I go along with Ann on her story about Sound Filtration as well.
I was hired by the company in January 2003. I worked for the company until April 2003 after getting a call to go back to doing some internet work on a full time basis. I made serval sales calls during the four months that I had worked for the company. I would say that only 15 ended up in paperwork being filled out. Out of those 15 only six were definate sales. Two were paid at the full commission rate while the other four were only paid $50 commission on. The reason for the low commission rates was due to credit issues and they had to be refinanced at a higher rate. For some reason the salesperson gets penalized for it. It was hardly worth the time and gas required for each sale.
The sales were done over a large area. The farthest sales call I went on was nearby Deception Pass. I wasn't too happy with going on. Since I got there very late, couldn't find the place, and had to come up with some creative ways to get the money for gas and a ferry boat ride to get out there.
The sales pitch to get the sales person into your home was deceptive to the client because no one is going to agree to having a sales person in their home for 90 minutes. So the standard procedure is to let the person know that they will be there for 30 to 45 minutes. I had several sales calls that had no one home and some that were bad addresses as well. I remember the one example of a bad address that I got when I had to go to the outskirts of Orting. Just goes to show that a lot of people in that live in the Seattle can't seem to say no when someone gets solicited. Most of the clients were solictied through a telemarketing center set up in the office and staffed by Girls who's average age was 16 years old. Most of them appeared to be high-school dropouts with children. They were being paid minimum wage as well. I didn't think that was going to be very effective for business in the end because of the Do not Call Registry getting a lot of attention by the media at the time. It was better than doing it door to door though. I was told that there were some dealers that did operate that way.
I was working for the company too when a lot of people lost their jobs due to Boeing and the dot.gone bust of 2001 (that's how I ended up here as well). So there were a few sales calls that I went on where people didn't have any money. I saw unemployment checks on the table. Once I made a call in a low income housing project in Auburn to a Ukrainian family that couldn't even speak English. I'd say most of the sales call I went to were to people who didn't have a lot of income and were just looking for some company to talk to.
The pitch to get you hired is that they made it look like you were an employee at first but when you sign the contract with them, you become and independent dealer required to have your own business license. You usually don't get paid until you have one. This issues solves a lot of accountability needed for The Employment Security Department.
I was much older than the owner as well as the employees that were working there at the time. The owner at time was about 25 and the rest were about the same age or a few years younger than him. I got the feeling by some of the hire ups that I had met in the company during my tenure there is that this was just a bunch of kids running a company who really didn't know what they were doing but managed to sell a great deal of machines in a short amount of time and that is really all that mattered to them.
Filter Queeen is a great machine for surface cleaning, filtering the air, and doesn't clog up. It's better designed for nonclogging issues than Dysan and has been around for around eighty years. It's high price ($3000.00 for a complete system)certainly shuts people off but in the end it is the last cleaning machine that they will need in their lifetime.
If you want one though get your own financing from your bank and remember it's a surface cleaning machine not a vaccum. If you have alergy or asthmetic issues in your household you should look into these products and skip the 90 minute pitch.
I recall at the time I had worked there Sound Filtration was listed as being a member of the Better Business Bureau but they are no longer listed as a member.
