First, let me start off by saying the person at Spherion hounded me for days at a time trying to get me into this position. I must have over 50 e-mails from him begging me to take this job. Since it was close to my house and the client was IBM, I figured I would go for it.

The recruiter promised continued work, a possibility from temp to perm and they 6 people were placed full time here last year. I finally started to work at IBM, doing excellent work, being told by my peers how well I was doing and that they are very happy to have me aboard.

Fast-forward a year later. I never taken off a day sick, I showed up on time, and stayed late when needed. I went above and beyond my job responsibilities. I was told by my IBM manager that "My contract was approved for the following year". I was hoping they would hire me, but at least I had another year to look forward to. That is up until a week later when out of nowhere, some guy calls me from Spherion on a Friday evening to tell me not to show up to work on Monday. Add to this he could not be any more rude.

I first tried to see if I could at least clear out my desk, however this resulted in IBM threatening to call the police on me. I tried contacting my manager, but she would not even return my e-mails. This later resulted in police showing up to my house telling me to stop e-mailing her (as a note, I only sent two-three e-mails) I also received a call from IBM security threatening me as well, just for showing up to try and clear out my desk. (They still have my laser mouse, CD and mouse pad by the way).

Now, here is the kicker. I only received one of my two final paychecks. I did not want to contact them since doing so results in them calling the police, so I filed a complaint with the wage and hour department of NY. I also filed a complaint with the BBB.

I went from loyal employee to criminal in one day for no reason at all. I promise I did nothing to deserve this sort of treatment. I strongly suggest staying far away from Spherion as well as IBM. I cannot even get into the things I heard IBM employees say about IBM. Anyway, I hope this does not fall on deaf ears.

#4 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I feel your pain bro

AUTHOR: Tom - (U.S.A.)

I got laid off from spherion with zero notice. Nobody returned calls or emails, but there was a reason. The last 3 contacts, including the region account manager got s**t-canned because they lost the ExxonMobil account. They use 20 vendors and laid off 30% of the contractors. All vendors were asked to reduce their rate including Spherion. They didn't drop the rate, so me and several others got the axe. I was also told I was on the so-called "redeploy" list. That was months ago. I have in my Spherion contract a clause stating vacation time would be accruded as I went through the year. In my 11th month, I got canned and Spherion refuses to give me my accruded vacation time. I knew I was up s**t-creek when Spherion sent me to the wrong Exxon location for my interview and had me fill out gobs of paperwork over 5 trips to the local Spherion office. Then I went through Spherion recruiter after Spherion recruiter because they keep firig these people. In fact, I have went through no less than 3 payroll admins at Spherion. At least I got to sleep with the first one! That was the only Spherion perk I received.....

I did file for unemployment, but since I worked in NJ , I would get more $$ filing with NJ, then I can file with NY later if needed. I do not think I was a security risk, but something was definitely fishy. All I wanted from my manager at IBM was to at least say "I'm sorry" for giving me wrong information. I did a lot from them and I feel they owe me that much.

My main point is this: If I were a black employee and they did this, I bet it would have been on the news that night.

Don,

I used to do a lot of contract and consulting work, much of it for large corporations. First, I learned to never count on temp-to-perm. It is nearly always temp-to-unemployed-without-notice.

In many of the larger companies there is a prejudice on the part of the full-time employees against the temporaries, consultants, and contractors. The full-timers often resent the fact that outsiders are often given the "fun" jobs, like designing and implementing new systems. The full-timers do what they can to sabotage the temps.

I suspect that someone at IBM accused you of being some sort of security risk. You will probably never know who it was or what they said you did. Their corporate culture is apparently that the word of a full-time employee is so convincing that there is no need to give you notice or hear your defense.

Perhaps the only way you will ever find out what happened is to apply for unemployment insurance and hope it is denied. Then you can have a hearing where the employer will have to state what you were accused of.
