I really dont think too highly of Staples, especially the Wellington Rd., London, ON, location.  I was fired over the phone after working 3 days for missing 2 days of work for personal (emergency) and unexpected reasons.  I feel I was mis-treated and should have been given a second chance with a warning and for God's sakes an explanation, however, NO instead I was given the boot.  Never did I receive a "Code of Conduct" booklet or package, nor did I sign what was expected of my performance during employment.

I don't like to use the "prejudice" word, but I strongly felt so out-of-place, being the only visible minority. Kelly, (Copy Center Mgr) felt compelled to get rid of me after finding out my cultural and religious background!! Can you believe that Staples NEVER discussed rules or regulations with me ... I mean NEVER! How professional was that??

I found the staff to be over-stressed, messy, clothes we untidy, hair was another disaster issue, non-friendly, never smiling to customers and had rude remarks to make after customers left, that were to say very unpleasant! Now, I am not speaking about the newer employees, but the crew that has been around over 5 years. My training was less to be desired and so rushed. When interviewed I was mislead to believe that Staples was a caring group of individuals once I started I felt the total opposite, you could say more like a slave for Staples. No consistency throughout staff members on how to do tasks in Copy Center.

Breaks if someone remembered to tell you it was OK to take onethen I took one. Lunch ... well; dont forget to punch-out ... Staples cant afford to pay us for lunch, what the HELL is that about, seriously! I was told one thing and expected to do another. Such as, Don't go to the customer to physically show them where to find products -- just point your finger to direct the customer (I thought they truly valued the customer) or point to the fax machine -- well, some people are not comfortable using office machines. Customers are left hanging without any assistance--until I showed up. I thought I was to drop everything I was doing to assist the customerapparently not. But, somehow I am supposed to know all of this!

Did anyone try to learn how to pronounce my name Oh, NO too much effort!

Over-charging customers with the Express Service thing...whatever happened to asking the customer what they wanted. Oh NO, because we must RUSH, RUSH, RUSH, like we were being timedonly give each customer 7 seconds of your time. Staples does not want human interaction, but rather robotic people--without compassion to work and SHUT UP! Since when was customer service RUSHED and leaving the customer to always pause and ask if someone going to help me do this? Louise in Copy Center is the most energetic employee I have ever seen, she is always smiling! You go girl!

I have a lot to say, for just working 3 days ... but my gut feeling was telling me that maybe the Staples location I was at was wrong, because originally I was hired to work at the Masonville location ... that were much, much, much more friendly and caring!

breaks

In the state of Indiana there is no law that an employer has to give you any breaks.  It is an agreement between you and your employer and you should have asked before signing any papers exactly what breaks you would get.

Sorry, I made a mistake -- I meant to say that I was NOT given a "Code of Conduct" booklet or package.  Thanks!

I worked for IBM, one of the largest companies, for 30 years and never got paid for lunch.

Our hours were:  8:30 - 12:00  12:45-17:15 --- We worked for 8 hours or more and we got paid for 8 hours. It was common to work for more than 8 hours but we still got paid for 8 hours.

You were not fired because of "prejudice" you were fired because after only working for 3 days you took off 2 days for "personal" reasons.  They want reliable people and starting off like that does not show you as being reliable.

But based on how you described this place why in the world would you want a "second chance".  It seems like you would want to go as far away from Staples as possible.

By the way the other Staples wouldn't have paid you for lunch either.  Because while I don't know every single law in the US or Canada I have yet to hear any State require an employer to pay for the lunch period.
