I was recently fired from staples for refusing to lie to customers about in stock items. They wanted me to tell customers who where not buying a plan that the item was out of stock because according to them they will loose money if they sell any electronic item without a plan or attachments. I was threaten by 2 managers about me getting fired for not doing my job (lying to the customer in this case). Finally I was fired today, Thursday, august 28 2008, when I asked for a change of schedule because I was starting school. Manager told me that he couldn't do it and that since I was a temporary employee he didn't need me in the store anymore. Funny how I was told in the interview after asking "how flexible is the schedule?", that staples works around my school schedule. He used that opportunity to get rid of me.

If you try to buy a Laptop from them and you say no to the accidental protection plan, they will refuse to sell you the laptop or any high priced electronic device. They don't even want the employees to offer the basic plan. No accidental no laptop I was told many times by the managers.

Give me a break

AUTHOR: TruthSayer - (USA)

OK, Donkey-boy, name ONE person whom George Bush fired.  It is very obvious from your insipid posts that you know absolutely NOTHING about politics, nor anything else for that matter, especially work environments.  You've never held a job in you pathetic little life.  How could you POSSIBLY know anything about it ???  The answer is -  YOU CAN'T

You are such a lying little scumbag that NO ONE believes anything you say ( or type ).  Why don't you do the world a favor and take a sledge hammer to your computer ?  And, by the way, what are you doing at home ?  I heard that you were spending the weekend in the Phenix City Jail.

Desperate Times

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

You have to understand the profit margins on the major electronics is thin. The margin on service contracts is obscene. Store managers are under tremendous pressure to 'make their numbers'. I'm sure there are managers who feel they have nothing to lose by lying to customers. If they don't make their numbers they're gone for sure. If they lie to customers they MIGHT be gone. They'd rather play the odds.

This type of sales tactic has beeen used by other retailers as well.

Managers and employers get away with this abuse of power all the time it happen a lot under george w bush because he wrongfully fired people to there is no justice

AUTHOR: Charles - (USA)

These type of abuses went on in 2008 & they are worse in 2012.  Its ok for employers to violate peoples rights & pick on them & harass employees.  While they their nice big SUV & live in a big 2 story house.  There is no justice anymore!.

I wonder about people sometimes...

AUTHOR: Ncreature - (U.S.A.)

Do people actually read what they are responding to or at least check the date on some of the reports here.

Anonworker12345 please read very carefully before replying to anything.

"I don't care if people believe me or not. It affected me back then, doesn't affect me now."

Your reply date: April 26, 2012 <---That's 3 years and 8 months later

I still stand by what I said back then and it is 100% true. I didn't have a single reason to lie about any of it. My Responsibility was to let people know what goes on behind the curtains.

btw: This lazy person now owns his own IT business and doesn't have to work for anybody.

Your Responsibility

AUTHOR: anonworker12345 - (United States of America)

You say this doesnt affect you, yet you decided to post about it.  Thats the first thing that doesnt make sense.  You claim human resources did nothing.  You should have followed up with them, then just gone up the chain.  There are 25 different ways to get your job back, you were just too lazy to go through the proccess, so quit complaining, grow up and move on.

Ncreature, Many Car dealers in the USA do something similar to their customers by LYING to them about.....

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

their monthly payments when they are negotiating their deal. The Car dealers will lead the customer into believing that the payment is for the car, & all the taxes & Dealer fees. But in actuality, in most cases the payment also includes a WARRANTY that the customer was never made aware of.

You can 'Google' this- AUTO DEALER LOUIS F HARRELSON TO PLEAD GUILTY, and read it for proof. Or you can 'Google' this- CAR SALES: TRICKS OF THE TRADE- CONSUMER ALERT, and watch that video for proof.

In short, the U.S. economy (most of it) is based on- LIES, DECEPTION, FRAUD, MANIPULATION, GREED, TRICKERY, DEEP CORRUPTION, & the CONSTANT PURSUIT TO FINANCIALLY INJURE THE INNOCENT PEOPLE LIVING HERE, & all over the WORLD.

P.S. Make sure to 'Bing' this- BROCK O'BOMB-A POEM, and read that poem, & all the others. Spread it all over the worldwide web!

Thank You.

Good luck to you!

Human Resources was contacted

AUTHOR: Ncreature - (U.S.A.)

I got an email today saying that this report was update and I felt the need to reply to it, even tho this is one year old still doesn't change the fact that the store has the same manager.
I did contacted human resources and it got me nowhere, I was told that they needed to contact the manager and hear his side of the story. I never got a call back and that was the end of it.

I told human resources everything that was going on in the store and the real reason why the manager felt like getting rid of me. I would have not been angry if I knew I wasn't doing my job correctly. They just didn't liked that I was questioning why they were refusing to sell items while they were in stock, just because the customer didn't want to purchase the protection plan.

oh well, it is what it is. I don't care if people believe me or not. It affected me back then, doesn't affect me now.

Should have called Human Resources

AUTHOR: rebuttal1 - (USA)

The first thing you should have done with an ethics violation is call human resources. There's a huge poster in every breakroom with the ethics hotline number, as well as information on the @work portal, and in the employee handbook. Not to mention had you called any of the corporate numbers, they would have looked into it. Yes that was wrong, but that wasn't Staples-that was your manager. They will fire any manager caught doing that, several have been let go for a lot less. There is a zero tolerance policy for "playing numbers games" and they are enforcing it!

Depends who you work with...

AUTHOR: Bigslama912 - (U.S.A.)

First of all this is completely untrue. Although Staples does lose money when selling a laptop with not attachments or plans Staples DOES NOT tell you to lie if the customer isn't buying anything with it. In this particular case it is the managment team and in no way shape or form the company of Staples. What you SHOULD have done is contacted the district or regional manager and let them know what was going on so something could be done about it. In the future just make sure that you file a complaint to the right people.

Ex-Employee - Never really had any problems

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

I am an ex-employee of the Hermitage, TN store - I worked there 3 1/2 years and never had any problems at all really. Of course we would get nagged for not getting a service plan sometimes for not selling them as an attachment to an item. If you had a manager to tell you to tell customers that an item was sold out if they didn't want it, then this clearly violates their Code Of Ethics and fudging their numbers and that manager would get fired for that. That manager would get into some serious trouble for that. Call the Staples Corp Office and speak with HR, I can pretty much guarantee this will get you somewhere.

Whoah, and I thought my experience was bad

AUTHOR: Synesthesia - (U.S.A.)

Sounds like you worked in Staples hell.

I worked for Staples also and even though I was a "part-time" employee I was forced to work full-time hours. They wouldn't let me go at my scheduled time and would make me stay super late on nights before I had to open. I was also forced to 8 days in a row starting in the middle of a "Staples week" (I think that's Sunday to Saturday). It was a very terrible experience.

I also had a manager who treated me like I was retarded and /refused/ to believe that one of my co-workers damaged a customer's photograph. She thought it was another co-worker of mine despite the fact that the copy job had been signed by the former co-worker.

I'm glad I left.

Contact Corporate.

AUTHOR: Iknoweztech - (U.S.A.)

If what you say is true, contact the Corporate Headquarters about the issue. Staples has a zero tolerance for managers who violate their ethics policies. Seriously, they've been fired for less.
