Okay, honestly, where did the mental illness come into play before that last sentence?

Were you acting strangely?  Do you have Tourette's (which is not mental but medical anyway) and were swearing loudly at people?  Do you have schizophrenia?  Dissociative identity disorder?  Were you sitting there having a conversation as 10 different people?  Were you talking to yourself about suicide or homicide?  Were you bird-picking at your food like an anorexic or inducing vomiting like a bulimic?  I absolutely do not understand how you feel you were discriminated against based on a mental illness.

I think you're using that as a card to make it seem like real discrimination verses just a manager asking loiterers to leave.  Sorry hon, but unless the circumstances were much different than you claim them to be and you were exhibiting very obvious symptoms of mental illness, you have no case.

I'm sorry you feel personally insulted and discriminated against, but in all honesty, there was no discrimination here.  Period.

How long were y'all sitting there for, before the manager came by (assuming either of you were taking up seating)? How long were you nursing that ice tea that another patron graciously bought you? It's very annoying to come into a coffee shop only to find all the tables and seats taken by folks with their laptops who no longer have any food or drink left. Some of these fine folks think it's a library or public square and they can hang out forever. It's a business that needs customers to leave once they're eating and drinking is done, to make room for new customers. Even you, whatever your illness might be, ought to be able to see the reason in that. Which brings us to your illness. Exactly what did your mental condition have to do with anything? Were you manifesting any socially inappropriate behavior, controllable or not? Since you obviously have the reasoning ability to come and bitch on this site, you can be reasonable about a business, that survives on a constant flow in and out of patrons, not being able to deal with every manifestation of a mental illness. It's not fair that you were given that cross to bear, but it's also not fair to force a business to watch other customers slink away, scared off maybe by out of the ordinary behaviors of another customer in the store. There's no perfect solution for that. And technically you were not a customer.
