In November of 2011 I got a seasonal holiday job. I worked for this company for the week of Thanksgiving and two weeks for Christmas up to the end of the year.
I kept my unemployment claim open so I would not lose a week of waiting when the job was over. I filed every week and reported my earnings. I received no benefits during this time.
In WA you can file your claim online which I had been doing. When my job ended and I went to file I was asked "why I am no longer working?"
Lack of work.
In my mind none of the above 4 was descriptive of why I wasn't working any more, which was Seasonal/temporary. So I chose "other".
Boy was that the wrong choice!! I got a 10 page questionnaire to fill out and answer as to "why I quit my job". I explained I did not quit, was not fired that it was temporary. Filled it all out then called the phone number listed to explain also. It was then I was told that I should of answered "lack of work". Really? I figured lack of work was akin to business is so bad "Sally" that I can't keep you any longer.
There is NO section for: temporary, seasonal or holiday, which BTW they want you to take jobs like this to "help you".
The lady on the phone added to my claim that I called and told me to continue to file, which I did. I just got in the mail that I am being paid no benefits for last week while they review my claim about my eligibility and in about 3-5 weeks maybe longer depending on their workload I will get a reply!!!!
So I call again. I get someone on the phone and tell them their site is flawed and they need to fix it by adding the option of temp. etc. work. She said they weren't going to do that. I said I would like to file a complaint then, she said sorry can't help you with that!! I tried to explain that if they did this is would mean LESS work for them because I can't believe I'm the ONLY one to have made this error. She then said that as soon as my boss from that job returned the paperwork they could get it all straightened out.
I called my boss, who is 25 miles away. She hasn't received any paperwork yet. They sent it to me at the speed of light but to the person that has to fill out the papers so I can get money they drag their feet.
Yes, I will get retro pay but that doesn't really help me NOW to pay the power bill does it?
So be warned when filing when you're done with a temp job, it's lack of work. You can't file a complaint, no one of the phone will give a number or address to contact and in looking at the site which I did before coming here, there is no place online to do so either.
Bad business practice in my opinion and since I and millions of others need this money to live it screws us up. Our landlords don't care, they want their money. A mistake was made which could of been prevented by the simple fact of adding another option to their web form.
