On February 2, 2006 a young man came to my door selling magazine subscriptions. After 20 minutes of bantering back and forth, I wrote a check and purchased one magazine for $32.00. The next day I cancelled the check with my bank AND called the 800 number on my receipt to cancel. I left a phone message detailing my wish to cancel any subscription in my name.
On April 26, 2006 I received a bill from a collection agency called Check Game Solutions out of Vero Beach, Florida. Not only am I being billed for the $32.00-a $30.00 fee has now been added which brings my total to $62.00 for a magazine I cancelled and have not received.
I immediately called the collection agency to dispute the claim. Their hours of operation are Mon-Fri 9:00am to 5:00pm. I placed the call at 4:30pm and received a recording stating that the office was closed. I left them two messages stating my dispute.
I have since filed a police report against Sunshine Subscriptions. The 800 number listed is not that of a magazine subscription company but rather of a dress company. The detective handling my police report spoke with an employee of this dress company and they will also be filing a fraud report since their phone number is being used illegally by Sunshine Subscriptions.

I should have added that North Carolina has severe collection agency licensing laws. I have checked with the Department of Insurance the regulating body and Check Game Solutions is not resistered. I attached the states here. You should file a complaint with them. You will find on the internet that the Attorneys General of West Virginia and Minnisota have actions against Check Game Solutions for similar violations. You will also find that the State will send an invetigator to Florida to see how many consumers in your state they have contacted. They will arrest the owners and as you see that take it seriously. This applies to out of state collection agencys as well
58‑70‑1. Permit from Commissioner of Insurance; penalty for violation; exception.
No person, firm, corporation, or association shall conduct or operate a collection agency or do a collection agency business, as the same is hereinafter defined in this Article, until he or it shall have secured a permit therefor as provided in this Article. Any person, firm, corporation or association conducting or operating a collection agency or doing a collection agency business without the permit shall be guilty of a Class I felony. Any officer or agent of any person, firm, corporation or association, who shall personally and knowingly participate in any violation of the remaining provisions of this Part shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. Provided, however, that nothing in this section shall be construed to require a regular employee of a duly licensed collection agency in this State to procure a collection agency permit.
