Always speak to the actual hotel and not Wyndham Customer service

I travel a great deal for my job and 95% of the time stay at Wyndham properties (i.e. Super 8, Days Inn, and Ramada). If you do book a special prepaid rate through Wyndham it is true that they will not cancel or refund it, thats the catch with the rate. I think they very clearly spell that out when you make the reservation.
As far as cancelling regular reservations, I recommend that you always speak to someone at the actual property and not corporate customer service. I have on occasion had to cancel reservations and even if I missed the cancellation deadline on my reservation, most of the time I have been able to do so with no charges as long as I did it directly with the property and not customer service.
Another tip too. I like booking directly with the property as they often can offer discounts you wont see on the web page. (i.e. business discounts or weekend specials) I very seldom have paid more than $60 a night at these properties.

Wrong! I had the same problem with Super 8 Motel. you are presuming that the individual above got a better rate by paying ahead and not simply reserving.
This is not neccesarily true. I made a reservation at the Marion, OH Super 8 WITHOUT paying ahead. I had to cancel 2 daYS BEFORE the date of the reservation. I had NOT paid ahead. In fact, my shot of the screensaver clearly indicates that I can cancel as late as 6 pm on the day that the reservation was for.
Still, when I went to cancel, they used the same old BS excuse that I had gotten a special rate and stated that they will be charging me anyway.
I have talked to their corporate office, filed and appeal, filed with the Attorney General's Office and the local BBB.
This is outrageous and dishonest and has nothing to do with getting a better rate by paying ahead.

You didn't just reserve a room..

Not only did you reserve a room but you paid for it in advance.
Call Super 8 and they said since reservation was made on their special "advance pay" plan thru Wydham I could not cancel it.
By paying for it in advance you get a better rate. But as a condition of this better rate they do not allow you to cancel it. They can give you a better price because they don't have to build in the cost of people cancelling their reservation.
Now, had you only "reserved" the room, you would not have gotten the better rate. But you would have been able to cancel up to the standard cancellation policy.
