I am a average modern household trying to survive in a world that is demanding and harsh for much of the time. I have 3 children, with only 2 at home now, and I go to College full time studying Juvenile Corrections with a 2nd major of Criminal Justice. My boyfriend is self employed and tries to work his schedule around my school so our children have a parent with them at home at all times. Or as often as possible.

I am not well off, nor do I mark above poverty in this country, but I am not on welfare and I support myself, as well as my children. I am not able to go far away for vacations, mostly because everyday life is expensive enough.

As a family, we will go on several 2-4 day vacations a year, and for the last 5 years we always stayed at Super 8 in what ever town we were at. If we want a day away we go to a closer one and stay 1 night and usually rent a nicer room (suite).

I have never had a hotel demand to keep a deposit in my life. NEVER have I destroyed, stolen, or refused to pay at any place we have stayed

I admitt that when I am not at home and I am paying no less than $89 for one night, (or should I say 18 hours), that I do not clean up every mess my kids make nor do I make the beds and there are times that the jugs I provided milk or juice for my kids in were left on the floor, next to the microwave, next to the trash, but at least I didn't leave it in the parking lot.

I guess I figured that I payed for the right to have someone else pick up after me for once.

On June 13, 2007 I had finished the last class for my spring term and wanted to do something special to celebrate the struggle the last year has been and how well we have managed to finish so wonderfully and learning how to be a family. I had finally started the path to becoming the person I have dreamt of becoming for over 10 years.

I usually will go online and reserve our rooms with a prepaid credit card that rarely has any money on it but since I always pay cash anyways it works for the reservation process. On this day, though, it was a spontaneous decsion to go, and it is only approximately 30 minutes away from home. We had just thrown together a few outfits, each, and jumped in our explorer to hit the water slide at the super 8.

Every time I have went online to reserve a room, I show up and give the cashier the cash needed for the time we will be staying. I have never had a single problem with this process and upon check out I never heard another word from any place.

It was explained to me this time (only difference is I didn't go online and use the credit card number to reserve a room) that if I used a credit card they would take a copy of the card and do nothing with it until check out where I would officially pay my bill, BUT since I was using cash I was required to give them the $89 for my room, UP FRONT, but also $89 for a deposit, that would be returned when we checked out. I was appalled by this, but mostly because I hadn't planned this extra expenses and I still had to feed my children dinner.

I should have just left, but instead I tried to work a compromise. See, I had already made big promises to the only important people in my life, my kids, and I don't break my promises. I offered to pay the deposit, but since with a credit card I was charged at check out why not with cash too? I have stayed at this place before, as well as 3 nights in Salem last march and one night at the coast a couple months back, I wouldnt' leave without paying.

No way, and I had to pay both. I explained my circumstance of not having money to do this and compromised with a $60 deposit so I had something left over. What I didn't realize I was doing was telling this place I was poor and should be watched because we have no manner and destroy rooms for no reason.

I tried to let it just pass, deciding it wasn't worth ruining my time. We went to our room, ordered pizza, and went down to the pool. When the pizza got there I got my children in the room for dinner. We ate 1 large Pepperoni pizza and had one more left for whenever the kids got hungary later.

My kids wanted to go right back down to the pool and I had to be the parent and explain they had to wait. I let them swim in the bath tub, because us poor folk only have a shower at home.

I then took them down to the pool for another swim and we were down there for several hours. NOt in the room to make a mess.

I was exhausted so we went up to the room and were in bed by 9 pm. All four of us. The next morning we were up when my 3 year old son woke up at 5 am. We took showers and in this time, somehow my son had gotten something on his shoe, or maybe just noticed it, either way, he doesn't like to have dirt on him and he tried to clean it off himself.

Kinda nice that at three years old he wants to be so helpful, unfortunately he made a mess in the bathroom. I was alarmed by what he had done and I grabbed the first hand towel I saw, which was all ratty and strings hanging off the sides anyways, and I cleaned up the mess my son made.

For breakfast I had coffe and my family had Orange and Apple juice. I also had brought milk and juice jugs from home. I ate 1 banana and 1 granola bar.
My kids each had a fruit, muffin, and a danish, while my boyfriend had nothing.

I put my son up to the table to eat his breakfast, and my daughter sat up to the little bench thing by the tv.

We were all excited when my seven year old walked up to the desk to ask if it was possible for the pool to open any earlier than normal. She was told they would open at 7:30 am and we were ready. We played so hard and felt so good about our trip.

We decided, as a family, to go to the family fun center as soon as we left and got the deposit back. I even told my son we would drive the bumber cars.

They all went out to the car as I went up front to check out. As the woman was opening my door she says "It was against out better judgement to rent to you without a full deposit and this is why..."

I was horrified at the comment. I had left the jugs there, didn't make my beds, but I had made sure to go through and pick up all the towels and put them in a pile in order to count them and make sure none had been packed by accident.

I hadn't noticed that directly under my three year olds chair, at the table where I had assumed they intended for them to eat, he had accidently dropped something on the carpet and I assume as he struggled to slide down off the big chair he stepped on what ever he had accidently dropped.

A wash rag and water would have worked and I would have done it if I had noticed, but by this time I had been offended and felt very uncomfortable. I am a surviver of an abusive relationship of 12 years and I am getting stronger every day about not letting people affect how I feel, but this time I was caught off gaurd.

I didn't defend myself when she told me they would have to steam clean the carpet. Ya right. Have they looked at the carpets lately. I bet those things haven't seen a steam cleaner since it was built.

Then, this woman picks up the rag I had cleaned my son up with and told me it was ruined and if I had wanted to clean something up I should have asked for a rag instead of using my guest towel.

It was a ratty hand towel and a three year old eating a muffin. If this isn't covered then what am I paying $89 a night for? A room with 2 beds so my kids can't even go to a different room, with 1 tv that had 14 channels with no cartoons until the morning, 4 plastic cups, shampoo, soap, and what? Friendly Atmosphere? Ha

It sure wasn't worth the feeling of low worth that she generously gave me without a second thought. Not to me anyways. I waited to call anyone until the following day because it bothered me. I also was a little busy coming up with a way to make up the trip to the family fun center I was unable to do.

That woman had intended on keeping my money, and this is why her comment about her judgement was made as she opened the door.

We did nothing wrong and this woman stole $60 from us.

I finally called the corporate office on the following day. It gave me some time to realize that I had not deserved that treatment and she did it because she assumed I have no money.

If I don't want someone to have access to my money, not to mention that I don't need to be in debt because it is hard enough raising kids without getting in over your head, then I should be complimented not judged by someone who doesn't know me.

I am not rich, nor do I rate above national poverty level, but I am a good mom and a good person who makes what I have work for us. When we do something we have fun, because it was something we earned.

Since when does a person get to treat you badly because you won't hand your credit card that has money on it to a company with as many complaints on credit card theft through their business as Super 8. I call that thinking with the brain god gave me.

That does not mean she can just take it anyways!

Super 8 was Fine w/Me

AUTHOR: Russ - (U.S.A.)

Travelled from FL to MS, with a Uhaul and a screaming cat. Made reservations with Super 8 in DeFuniak Springs, FL. Arrived close to midnight. The clerk was friendly, got my CC run through without delay, and suggested a couple of diners that were open at that hour.

Had no problem upon checkout.

Maybe the problem is w.the OP's attitude.

why so many excuses

AUTHOR: Rebecca - (U.S.A.)

I read all the rebutals to not only mine but the many you can find for super 8 alone and one thing comes to mind. You all have a whole bunch of excuses why it is okay to treat another human being as if they did not deserve respect. You can excuse these actions all day long, and hope you feel better because now I wonder how much of it is super 8 policy and how much of it is too many unhappy mean people doing things wrong and rudely simply because they can. If treating people like this is acceptable than I hope never to be at your mercy but since you work for super 8 this won't be an issue. Never stayed there since, nor will I again. Motel 6 may not be the best, but they give more respect or they will be straight up about what they stand for. Rude is rude, even when you manage to make a rule stating it is okay to do. Shame on you all!!!

A few things...

AUTHOR: Beth - (U.S.A.)

I certainly cannot speak for this motel in question, but I can offer a few tidbits that could be helpful in the future.

While the typical practise is not to charge the credit card until check out, an authorization (temporary hold) IS usually placed on the credit card when you check in with one. If the authorization is declined, you would have to use another form of payment to check in. Some hotels do require deposits with cash paying guests, because they may have problems with trashed rooms, broken furniture, etc. If they do, it is not meant as a discrimination - it's backup. The majority of the damage done in hotels comes from cash paying guests - just a simple fact that I have noticed in 10 years of the hospitality industry.

Think of it this way. If you went to Wal Mart to buy a television, they wouldn't let you walk out the door with the promise of bringing the money in the next day. You can be Honest Abe, but in order to function as a business, you need payment up front.

May I ask why you did not use the prepaid credit card at check in, if they said they were only going to make a copy of it until check out?

Also, $89 for a hotel with pool and waterslide is pretty fair for a family of four to spend most of the evening and morning swimming and having fun. Our rates aren't too far under that, and we don't have a pool at all.

I would certainly call the Super 8 franchise to have this situation investigated. Without knowing both sides, it would be fair for anyone to make a judgement. If the hotel was acting badly, though, the franchise would want to know.
