I am a V.I.P. member for Super 8 hotels. I travel very frequently for business. My last three experiences at Super Eights have been terrible.

In all three cases, I have not received my wakeup call. In all three cases, this has cost me business. When I report this and ask for a discount or a free room due to their neglegence, they give me excuses. They tell me how their system doesn't always work. They tell me "that is why they put alarm clocks in the room." When I ask why this wasn't told to me when I asked for a wake-up call, they respond by telling me that "I should be smart enough to know that something could go wrong." "That is why they spend the money to put alarm clocks in the room." As though taking 2 seconds to tell me this would have been a large investment. At all three places they didn't care at all.

Major credit cards seem to be on to this horrible hotel chain as well. They seem to readily refund your money when you discuss their methods of treating their own customers. Super Eight just doesn't understand that it's their customers that keep them in business.

There is a lot more detail I'm leaving out. Trust me, I travel 3 weeks a month and I only stay at Super 8 if absolutely necessary. They cause you to lose business and then blame it on you.

Wake-up?

AUTHOR: Sylvia - (United States of America)

I would like to make a comment about Super 8.  Over the past 4 years, Wyndham (previously Cendant) has made great stride in improving what properties hold the Super 8 name.  They are required to make significant capital improvements and have rebranding themselves in the industry.  I know I own one.   Yes there were quite of few motels with substandard services back in 2001 but that has changed.

Being from the other side as a owner and You being a frequent travelers, I feel that you may not understand that the motel operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year.   A missed wake-up call should be the least of your troubles.  We had the same problem a few times, people expect the world from us and if there is a operator error, or a phone error.  The guest blames us for missed wake-up call.  Wake-up calls at our facilitity is totally automated service.  If the guest accidently unplugs the phone, if the cord is shorted out, the guest blames us.

We had a similiar situation where the guest missed his wake-up call because he told us the wrong room he was in.  If it is that important that you wake up a certain time, we don't believe it is the motel's responsibility that you wake up and get you dress on time for whatever you need to do.  If you are going to lose your job or business if you don't wake up in time,  bring your own alarm if you are really concern, use back-up alarms in the room or a cell phone.  No, the motel should not give your money back because you are using everything; Amenities, heat/cooling, bed, furnture, probably getting a free breakfast.  Think about it.  And of course someone has to be paid to clean your room and check you in, take your reservations.

I can understand if you are paying 100 a night.  But that $50.00 for some hotels, means that they are barely breaking even to pay their bills.

Thanks for listening

Stop the racism

AUTHOR: Honestreviewer20 - (U.S.A.)

I just discovered this site and I am surprised with the racist comments made by Americans towards the Asians and eastern people. I appreciate this comment:Us Indians must be doing something right, we own 60% of all economy motels, and are moving up the scale and purchasing
higher end brands as well. If all the Indian motels were bad, we would be out of business, and not the wealthiest minority in this great country of ours.
That was great. Also I think that this is very true. You guys really need to try to appreciate instead of being rude and offensive to all Indians. This was very offensive to me. I also like the comment made by D from Houston, Texas. Kudos to you dude. That was great and true. Why are you guys going on and on about Indians and Pakistanis. My father owns hotels and most of the people that come into the lobby look at him with evilness and prejudice, then they ask if the rooms are clean or not. All he says is," If you doubt our hotel why do you even come here?" Secondly, after they buy the room they are fully satisfied and they leave comments and notes in the rooms. It is truly a great feeling to experience when someone who generalizes Indians comes to our hotel and leaves saying," your hotel is great, we had a great stay and it was awesome." So all I want to say is learn to appreciate and not generalize.
Thanks.
(Do not take this offensively anybody.)

I work for Indian

AUTHOR: Julie - (U.S.A.)

The Super 8 where I work is independently owned by an Indian. He is also an American citizen who pays taxes.

I personally had a guest tell me that they were enjoying their stay with us, and that we were very clean- "not like those Indian-owned ones". They also told me that they would never stay in one if it were run by Indians.

I could not wait to tell them that, indeed, we ARE "run by Indians". They were shocked. I also told them that my boss is fastidious in his person and in his motel, reminding them that people are different, no matter their color or country of origin.

If you come to our Super 8, in Chariton, Iowa, expect a clean atmosphere, couteous staff, and, oh yeah, and Indian owner.

How do you wake up at home?

AUTHOR: Scott - (U.S.A.)

I am an employee of the company, and let me tell you all one thing! I am sick and tired of people complaining about the littlest things and then wanting a refund? NO! Some guests use the room, screw on the bed, dirty it up, and then complain about something and expect a FULL refund for something petty! Your "wake up" issue is NO big deal, and I totally agree with the manager in saying that is why they put alarm clocks in the room! How in the hell do you wake up at home? You certainly don't have your job call you, NO, you set your alarm, and that is what you need to do in all hotels you stay at, because wake up systems are computerized, and can fail. Who would you blame at home if your alarm did not go off? You don't deserve a refund or a discount, in my opinion. People need to be more self-sufficient. Just like calling and asking for directions, you don't have a computer? You can't read the directions print out? Are you to stupid to look at signs and read for crying out loud? And then they call and say, Yeah, I am on "such and such road", and pause!! Personally, discounts and free rooms should only be given if it is something serious, such as finding a dead body in your room or the ceiling caves in. I have had people demand a free night because their car was broken into, and how is that OUR fault, especially when there is a BIG OLE SIGN that says "We're not responsible for lost or damaged items" THAT INCLUDES YOUR CAR!! Grow Up, and just take this as a little issue with no big deal, if you really had to get up, then you should have set your alarm, I ALWAYS do. Your a big girl, I am sure you're capable of getting out of bed! And as far as your being a "VIP" Member, if you did all of the traveling around you say you do, you would know THOSE CARDS ARE NO GOOD ANYMORE AND HAVE BEEN THAT WAY FOR A WHILE, so you can take your VIP status and shove it up your a**!

Good service/Bad service can happen from anyone

AUTHOR: D - (U.S.A.)

Jeff, David, Sherry:

I find your comments ridiculous. Truly. I am Indian American. Born and raised in America, and have lived in Texas for 26 years, namely, Houston.

First of all, I know someone who owns 4 hotels (not motels), and they are of Indian descent. He has won the best quality award in the state of Texas for Comfort Suites. Twice.

He is highly successful, and his family is very hard working. He has an MBA.

Sherry: are you really that ignorant to believe that money is handed to you? only someone with this kind of logic system would wonder how "indians" can afford this and that. Maybe Indians don't live credit card to credit card and absorb themselves in high debt like the average American does. Maybe Indians do not have a 50% divorce rate like America does, and maintains a tight knit family structure. Maybe Indians actually work hard when so many of "American" daughters are having sex in middle school and sons are going to get drunk at high school parties. Ever wonder why Indians and Chinese are usually the top ten in most schools?

David, since you're from Texas, let me let you in on something. I went to Clements High School, in Sugar Land Texas. It is rated one of the top High Schools in Texas, and the year I graduated it was NUMBER 1 in all of Texas (yep, as far as I recall, that includes your Dallas). Guess what, #1 in the school was a Chinese girl, #2 was an Indian boy, #3 was an Indian boy, it went on and on.... the FIRST Anglo student was #11. Ooopss... sorry. Probably pissess you off doesn't it? I personally know of 4 Indian american students that received a 1600 on the SAT. Countless others have received 1500+ scores.

Sherry, you are familiar with the SAT, aren't you? You know, that little exam you need to get into a good college (your local hick community college doesn't apply here, sorry).

You sound like one of those kinds to trip in a grocery store, then sue the store and collect benefits from the government types. You ARE NOT the kind of American than made America what it is today - the number one country. You are the lazy leech type, and guess what, all those Indians, Pakistanis, or whatever that you like to poke fun of and not give business to, are 10-100 times more beneficial to this country than you or your family is, or probably ever was. At only 1-2% of the U.S. population, they pay, per capita, more in taxes (usually due to higher income levels), than Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and some Asians. Merrill Lynch released a report documenting that the Indian Asian ethnic group is the highest, or second to highest ethnic group in America. They make REAL contributions to this country. The pentium computer chip was engineered by an Indian American. Lasik surgery was advanced by one. Free email services such as hotmail was invented by one. Approx 25-30% of Microsoft programmers are of Indian descent. You're sorry but wouldn't even be able to use a computer without windows!

I worked as a web developer, and to be honest, the guys from India and Pakistan (NOT Indian Americans such as myself), could usually run circles around us, American, programmers. They were good and hard working. Its the successful immigrants story, like the Italians, Germans, and Irish 200 years ago that made this country what it is.

Jeff: I'm not going to deny that bad service was not rendered to you, but come on, lets be realistic, you are going to a cheap motel. If you need to wake up early, use the FCKIN alarm clock! If you have had this problem before, bring your own. Most cellphones even have an alarm function. To rely on a... what... SUPER 8 MOTEL clerk is ridiculous. Get real, and stop whining about your problems, or go to a real hotel next time, if you can afford it. Ever heard that old adage you get what you pay for? Well it is true.

David: You mentioned that the first thing you ask for when you go to a Hotel is if it is owned by Americans or not? Well, Why not just get to the point and ask if it is owned by Whites? Because if the person is someone like me, I'm American, and you would be told it was owned by an American. The reason you FEEL you have experienced this by Indians is because Indians make up a good majority of the motel business. Something like 50% of Days Inns for examples are Indian owned/operated. I bet you wouldn't dare ask this question to a huge hotel, such as the 80-100 Million dollar Hyatt Regency in Downtown Houston, or the $49 Million dollar Marriott in Sugar Land, both of which, by the way, are Indian owned. Again, I can bring the same point with Sherry on you. You feel like being patriotic, don't ya? Well, those Indians working hard over there pay more in taxes than you, i.e. the roads you drive on, the healthcare, the public schools, etc. are paid MORE BY THEM, and LESS BY YOU. So you really need to think about that. And most, if not all of those people have their families here, in the U.S. so its not like they are keeping $100 bucks a month and sending the rest back to India, Pakistan, whatever. The Money is staying here. So what does it matter if you gave the money to a brown man with an accent or to a white one? Really, don't use the cover of nationalism or patriotism, it gets to down right racism. Surprised to here this from a Texan, we're usually known for hospitality.

Sorry if anything in this post offends anyone, but the thread itself is offensive. My point is not to offend people, but to hopefully force them to think about the situation from another viewpoint, which, clearly, they have not. This provincial minded thinking won't help anyone. At the end of the day, the David types are far and few between. Maybe 1%. I don't think the local hotel owner, of any ethnicity, cares for what he does or thinks. They keep their sights on the big picture. As an Indian American, I have the unique opportunity to view both view points, and to have fully experienced both cultures, and there are many good things and bad things with both cultures. But when it comes to work ethic, and education, in these two areas, it is very clear that Indians perform much better, on average, than white americans. These two areas are also key to financial success, and that is why you see this happening. It is easy for people on here to try to categorize or pigeonhole bad service to being an Indian thing, afterall, some of the major motel chains are owned by Indians more than any other ethnic group. Indians are also more highly visible as they will usually operate their own as well, in order to keep costs lower and profits higher. But so what? if you guys are trying to prove a point, you would need a broader cross section of examples. The few anecdotal incidents that have occurred in your life cannot substantiate the claim that Indians cannot run the hotels properly. As I have said, many have run the hotels very well and have even won statewide or even natioanl awards. Show me examples of Indian run hotels in various price categories and their failures before you try to prove a point Jeff, David, Sherry. Until then, it has been reduced to nothing more than racist venting.

Asian Owned Hotels

AUTHOR: Brian - (U.S.A.)

I have worked in the hotel industry for about 8 years. Approximately 5 years of my expierence has been with Cendant (Parent Company of Super 8).

All of the Cendant Hotels are independently owned and operated. Cendant has over 5,000 hotels under their various flags. I have seen a lot of these hotels and know about most of them. There are some extremely good Asian owned hotels. There are also some very bad Asian owned hotels. Most people are somewhere in the middle, just struggling to survive. Cendant is working to weed out all of the bad ones, regardless of income that it brings into them.

To answer Sherie's question on how Asian's afford the hotels etc that they buy. Most of them form a coalition/partnership with friends and family and they pool their money together. Once this is done they buy a property increase revenues enough so they can then purchase another property etc.

Please, as hard as it is, do not categorize all "Indian" owned hotels as bad and all "American" owned as good. If you do this, you will be severly disappointed. If you find a good hotel, stay there, no matter what nationality the owner is.

Race has nothing to do with the facts. The facts speak for themselves.

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

Jeff, Sherrie, I'm with you!! In every case where I've stayed in a Motel run by "Indians, etc" the rooms have been substandard to say the least. My horror stories are too numerous to go into, but I can speak of my local Motels owned and operated by Indians. They are nasty. They change names (Brands) frequently because they cannot meet their franchisors standards, They try to operate as cheaply as possible to maximise profits. One I know only washes bedspreads once a year unless they have no choice but to wash it due to some accident. The maids clean 15 to 25 rooms each per day. (How clean can they be when check out is 11:00am and check in is as soon as they are "cleaned"). I carry a black light when I travel and use it to check a room before I unpack. The disgusting things I've found make me check out quite often. Management acts very surprised but I've had no trouble getting my money back. My reasons are justified and can be substaniated very easily when I produce the black light at the front desk.
Saj, I concur 60% of the Motels in this country are owned by Asians. The US Govenrment helps to subsidise them by offering low interest loans, exempting them from taxes. In this business a Native White American isn't afforded those benifits. I see no Confederate Flags around here. Most Motels around here are Mom and Pop Motels but they are getting bought up rapidly and then torn down to build a larger National Branded Motel owned and operated by Asians. So the Mom and Pops are a dying breed. Most Mom and Pops offer cleaner rooms, better service and better rates. Personely, I can't see spending over $50.00 for a place to sleep. The more ammenities a Motel has the higher the price. There is no free lunch in a Motel. When I travel it is for a reason, business, visiting someone, or vacationing. I don't spend much time in the room. Give me a clean room, a bath and a decent bed and I'm happy. When I leave the room is almost as clean as when I checked in. Enough from me.

To the racist Sherrie

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

What an interesting question you posed: "By the way Saj, just how is it that you Indians can afford to come here and buy all this crap, when some of us Americans would love to own a small business but just can't seem to be able to fund it? Don't seem fair to me."

I'll be glad to answer this for you. Have you ever noticed how hard people from India work to make it in this country? Most work 7 days a week, 16 hours a day, and they work HARD at what they do. Would you be willing to maintain such a schedule? Probably not, as that would not allow you any time to sit in front of the TV, stuffing your face, while waiting for the mailman to deliver your unemployment check.

How do they fund their business, you ask? They are intelligent and know how to manage their finances. They live within their means and often do without in order to achieve their dream of business ownership. Would you be willing to do that, too? Nope ..

I think it's great that you will yourself to avoid all Indian-owned establishments. Good luck finding any American-owned ones, if they are any. The only ones I've seen are red-neck owned no-tell-motel-dumps with Confederate flags flying out front. And I agree with you, that would be a much more suitable place for you to stay.

Just a few thoughts on the subject

AUTHOR: Sherrie - (U.S.A.)

I must admit if I am checking out a motel and find out it is not American owned I will run the other way, and that is my right as an American. I have seen many convenience stores and budget motels go to the dogs when they become Indian owned.

By the way Saj, just how is it that you Indians can afford to come here and buy all this crap, when some of us Americans would love to own a small business but just can't seem to be able to fund it? Don't seem fair to me.

The fact is, they don't care what you think of their place or the cleanliness of it, I refuse to stay if it is not American owned!!

Support your hard working fellow Americans!!

Not all Indian owned properties are bad

AUTHOR: Saj - (U.S.A.)

C'mon, saying that all Indian owned motels are bad is like saying everyone in Texas is a hick. It's not the truth.

I'm Indian, and own multiple properties, 7 at last count. ALL of them are very clean & earn awards. One of them was Super 8 of the year. Out of all the Super 8's.

I agree with the above, instead of "sounding" racist, ask to see the room rather than the ethnicity of the owner.

Us Indians must be doing something right, we own 60% of all economy motels, and are moving up the scale and purchasing higher end brands as well. If all the Indian motels were bad, we would be out of business, and not the wealthiest minority in this great country of ours.

Racial Profiling

AUTHOR: Raj - (U.S.A.)

Regarding comments on hotels/motels being operated by people from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, I would strongly deny this. I am a former manager of Super 8 and curerently run my own motel and proud to say that the Super 8 that I had managed was rated as # 1 in the state and was within the top 10% of Super 8 across the country.

There are motels/hotels that I have stayed at operated by non Asian person and have found unclean bathrooms, rooms and other unsanitary conditions. So do not generalise and say that hotels/motels operated by Asians are usually not fit to be occupied. I would suggest that next time you decide to rent a room ask to see the room first and then stay.

Oh by the way if you see the room and for some reason you don't like it tell the front desk person the reason and they should (if they care about customer service) offer you a different room or promise to look in to your concern.

In response to "non-american" owners

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

In response to the comment on Super 8 Motels owned by people of Indian, Pakastani, etc. origin. I am the assistant manager of the Super 8 motel in Germantown, WI and we were recently purchased by a couple of East Indian decent.

Their dedication to creating a positive customer experience is strong. They have begun negotiations in upgrading our already fine motel to better meet the wishes of our guests.

In today's society of racial profiling, we need to be careful to rate a hotel on the quality of the service not the race of the owner. I would welcome the opportunity to show off our dedication to customer service.

No standards = Loss of my business

AUTHOR: Jeff - (U.S.A.)

Vicki and the employee before hit the nail on the head. Each motel is individually owned. I can't have one concept in my mind when I think of this company. It depends on who owns that particular franchise.

I travel a lot, just not in states where those previous employees work. It might be nice to give them a try if I ever do, but in Texas what people have started advertising is whether or not the rooms are American owned and operated. I will take a photo of what I am talking about.

I am not predjudiced and regardless of what some of you liberals say, (and I know I am going to offend some of you) stereotyping is not bad. It is simply a way of categorizing. When I go into a motel the first thing I ask the desk clerk is, "Is the owner of this motel from India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh."

Through my experiences I have come to trust this observation; if a motel is owned by someone from these countries, service is lousy, they lie, they do not keep the rooms clean, and there is NO concept of customer service. I vote with my feet! and you know what? most of my associates do the same.

Now, I'm sure there are some that will brand me a racist or some kind of horseshit like that, but in reality, that just ain't so. I'm a salesman. Many of my customers are also from these countries and I socialize with them, sell them my product and we get along with them real fine.

They ain't no different than anyone else, they want to get the best prices, they cheat on their wives, they go out drinking with me and in those situations, they are just one of the boys. But I will tell you this, they have a different mentality when they are on the other end of the sale. Just my opinion, but you can take it to the bank!

DON'T JUDGE ALL SUPER 8 MOTELS

AUTHOR: Vicki - (U.S.A.)

Super 8 Motels are owned by different companies. What they have in common (other than name)is that they have quarterly inspections where they must meet the requirements of the franchise standards. To insure that a particular Super 8 Motel passes inspections with the required standards, refere to the Super 8 Motel International Directory. If the listing is shaded in blue, the Super 8 Motel meets and exceeds these standards.

Inspections will now include more focus on customer service. This is a major break-through.

Please give Super 8 Motels another look. We ARE NOT all alike. Some of us really do care about the satisfaction of our guests. We guarantee it in Wausau, WI. If you are not happy with your stay, your room is free. Give us a try!
