I have had this account for about a month. I was initially going to use another bank, however, TD Banknorth was open on a Saturday, so I opened a checking account.

I had an overdraft fee assessed a few weeks after the account was open, which part of it was my fault (I didn't add up debits correct in my register) and the other was the fact that they assesed me for all my uses at other banks ATMS in one shot. I was also never told how much they charged me to order checks, so when I got my statement, it was much less than I had figured out.
So I wrote a check on tuesday, as I usually get my pay on thursdays. The mail was delayed for MLK Day, and when I checked my account balance on friday night (at 11:15 pm), it had not hit my account.

Now, when I had the earlier overdraft, I was told by one of their Customer Service Reps that if something posts to my account that will overdraw me, then I will have until 7pm that day to make a deposit, and I would not be assessed an overdraft fee.

So Saturday, the check posted at 9 am on my account, and I went to the bank to deposit my check. I was under the assumption that I would not get assessed because of what they had previously told me. So this AM, I checked my account balance, and I was nailed for $30. So I sent an e-mail to the bank stating that I was told I would not be assessed for this fee, and requested the overdraft fee be redeposited into my account.

The bank sent me a message back stating that they posted it on Friday. But how could they have posted it on Friday when it clearly said on my account that it was on Saturday.

I sent another message back, stating that this is a devious practice and I that I felt lied to by their own people, who had told me I would not have a fee assessed.
I would strongly encourage others to bank elsewhere. They couldn't even get my name right, despite the fact that I wrote my first and last name clearly on the e-mail. They don't care about customers.

If this was my fault, and I didn't cover the check the day it hit my account, fine. I'd pay the overdraft fee. However, I did and according to their own people I should not have been assessed that.

I have had other minor problems with this bank as well, including the fact that I was told by one teller that my debit card would work, and that the AVAILBLE balance was incorrect. I went to the grocery store to pick up some items, and was embarassed because my card was declined even though I had just made a deposit. So I had to go back to the bank where another teller was able to straighten everything out. So now, since I have so little faith in the tellers, (except the one that fixed everything), after I make a deposit, I go to the ATM in the lobby to assure that everything is correct.

Thank you for your time in reading this!

From The Ignorant One

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

Number One: I can add and subtract.
Number Two: The last time I used an ATM was in L.A in 1980. BoA had just installed them and I found them unrelyable. It really bites when you can't get money at 1 or 2 in the morning when you're traveling.
Number Three:If Monday is a holiday, the mailman delivers all the mail that would have come in on Tuesday.
Number Six: Credit union's fees are alot less expensive then banks. I deposit my check and carry only enough cash to last me between checks. Proven fact, people with cash spend 37% less then people using cards. I own my own house, washer and dryer so I don't have to go to the laundrymat and stand around and feed quarters. The one and only time I paid an NSF fee was back in 1974. I figured it out 34 years ago. I had better things to do with my money then pay rip off NSF fees to rip off banks. 79 cents for money orders is alot cheaper then paying NSF fees. Yeah, I guess that makes ME the ignorant idiot. I'm not the one paying the NSF fees.

A couple of questions...

AUTHOR: Striderq - (U.S.A.)

What is the posting time at your bank? Most banks post at midnight for that business day. If this is true for your bank, when you looked at 11 PM on Friday, no your check had not yet posted. When you looked at it at 9 AM Saturday it had posted for Friday night. Which menas your deposit would have to have been made by 7 PM Friday? If you had the check Friday, why didn't you deposit it Friday? Most times by the time you see it posted, it's too late to cover with a deposit.

Response to the ignorant individual who replied....

AUTHOR: Star - (U.S.A.)

Number one, CORY...I admitted to making a little error on my account ONCE. It was an accident, and totally my fault. Does that make me a bad person? No. It happens to everyone, once in a great while.

Number two: The reason that I used a non-TD Banknorth ATM was because the one where I was at the time (and the only one for several miles) was down and I needed some cash to put into a Christmas card. The bank admitted their error and refunded me the amount for that, because it was their fault.

Number three: I get my check in the mail, and they are always mailed out on Mondays. So, anyone with half a brain cell would realize that having the mail delayed even one day messes up the mail for at least a week.

Number four: You didn't read what the banks policy was. If something hits your account, you have until 7 pm that night to make a deposit, and you will not get hit with a fee. I checked after 11 pm Friday night, and the check did not post until Saturday, which means I was NOT supposed to pay the fee.

Number Five: A string of NSFs? No. This was only my second time, and I shouldn't have been hit with the fee this time around. I was mislead with the banks policy.

Number Six: I hate credit unions and I don't carry cash. And the fact is that MONEY ORDERS are a ripoff! Why do that when I pay my bills online? In this world, anyone that carries cash on them is an idiot. The only time I have ANY cash on me is if I am doing laundry, then it's only about 10 dollars in quarters.

Number Seven: When I had made the deposit, and went to the store to make a purchase, I was told that my deposit was fine, and that I didn't need to draw out the cash. So how do you explain that?

Personally I think that you are an idiot, and should find something better to do with your life instead of make judgements.

FYI: I did get everything fixed with the bank. I will continue to bank with them because after looking into the issue, it was resolved.

So, Cory, from Texas....now what do you have to say?

You're An Accident Looking To Happen

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

You haven't had your account a month and already you've run up a string of overdrafts. Pay off the overdrafts and close up your account TODAY and join a credit union, otherwise you're just gonna continue to rack up hugh amounts in overdraft fees. You couldn't add up simple figures in your checkbook. You forgot to add in the bank's charge for using "foreign" ATMs. What does it matter when they charge you for their use, whether one at a time or all at once? It's usually at the end of the month on your statement but some banks charge you at each withdrawl. Couldn't you have used TDB's ATMs at no charge? You were never told how much they charge for checks. Did you not think to ask? You state you go online to check your balance. Could you have checked to see how much they charged you for checks online? You wrote a check on Tues. You get paid on Thurs. "The mail was delayed for MLK day". MLK day was on a MONDAY. WHY would a Monday holiday delay a Thur check? If anything it would have made your check come in on the next day, Friday. That makes no sense but it sounds good. And anyway you still wrote the check on Tues you didn't have the funds for it. You were hoping for the float and lost. You shouldn't have a checkbook or a debit card. Deposit your check into a credit union, take out enough cash to last you between checks, get money orders to pay your bills. Otherwise you're gonna pay large amounts of money to ANY bank on NSF and overdraft fees. You can't help yourself. You'll be better off and a lot richer.

I have attempted twice today to contact someone from TD Banknorth via their message system on their webpage, and once last night. So far, no one has answered me. I guess that their policy is to ignore people who have legit complaints. I will keep this updated as I fight for my money back.
