J.D. Power and Associates lists Talk America as number one in customer service. I no longer trust the opinion of J. D. Power and Associates. Talk America intentionally misled me regarding the services that I would receive if I signed up with their service. When I called to ask them why didn't they honor what I was told by their customer service person, they said they didn't know anything about it and did not keep a tape recording of the matter.

I immediately cancelled the service after only 6 DAYS (5-14-2004 until 5-19-2004). Talk America now states that I owe them $20.00 for 6 days of service. Essentially, there are 31 days in a month so and, according to Talk America's calculation, a customer is charged $20.00 per every 6 days of service or $100.00 per month. This is not the amount I agreed to pay when I signed up for Talk America's Service. I have learned my lesson. I will never switch to an OFF-BRAND phone service again.

The way a pro-rate is issued is based on your monthly service plan divided by the time on service. For example if your monthly plan is 19.95 for an unlimited local plan and you were only on service for 6 days it would be 19.95/30 days (if in a 30 day month) = $0.665 per day and at 6 days that you had service is 3.99 so hence 19.95 - 3.99 = 15.96 you would receive a credit for 15.96 off your total invoice. taxes and surcharges are not pro-rated.

Talk America has agreed to close my account and zero

After much haggling, Talk America has agreed to close my account and zero out the balance. According to JD Power and Associates, they would not have ranked the company #1 in customer service if, at least 1 million people had not said so, I find this suspect with Talk America. Anyway, it was a lesson learned. If you plan to switch to an off-brand phone company do your research on ripoffreport.com.
