i went to target in san dimas, ca. and check on their prices on the computer that they have in house. You could also use the same computer to order. I printed a page of a digital camera which they have for $199 and when i went to thee counter it's priced at $399.

I asked for the manager but when the manager came he said that the price is $399 and the price on the reason for the lower price on their computer is because if you add shipping and handling it would be the same ($399) isn't that a stupid answer since it would be $200 dollars for shipping and handling alone ?

Fine, I said I would just order using their in house computer, but they won't let me. They said that I have to go home and use my computer to order, but you could use the same computer to buy other things. I would be fine if they ( 3 people came to me just to disclaim the price on their computer )just said it's a mistake and they can't sell it to me for that price, but hearing their excuse that it would also total total $399 because of the shipping and handling and that is from a product that is advertised for $199.

And another thing, when I said that how come you can order other things but that camera using their computer, they pointed me to one computer that is down and not working saying that it is the only computer that you could order it from. Probable the reason I was treated like this was because I am asian, if I were white , then it would be a different story.

me confused

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

1. I went to Target department store.

okay

2. Target has a computer setup that lists all the merchandise that you could order online and pick up at that store.

why would you go to a target store to order something online, that you can pick up right there at the store itself?

3. I used that computer to check on digital cameras.

Why not a home or a library?

4. I found one that is priced $199.00.

Okay.

5. I printed that page and took it to their electronic department.

Why once again go online with a supposed computer at a target store 'casue I thought that there were no computers at a brick and mortar store just to go online to order since your right at the store to buy a product there.

6. The person showed me the camera, but said the price is $399.00

okay, most likely the in-store price at your local area or they maybe showed you the wrong camera.

7. I asked for the manager thinking that the price hasn't been adjusted yet.

Why didn't you ask the cashier in front to ring up the total price of the camera instead of calling the manager.

8. Manager came, and said that the price is really $399.00.

Again should of rung up the price with the cashier.

9. I was still OK until he said that the reason why the price online is $199.00 is because when you add SHIPPING & HANDLING it would also total $399.00.

Again either pricing mistake or they picked up the wrong camera thinking it was the one you wanted to buy.

12. I can't believe what he just said about the price and the shipping & handling, so I asked to be assisted in using the computer to order the camera online.

Again, why go to a local target store and order online on a SUPPOSED computer setup for online ordering. Also again I don't think there are in any brick and mortar store, becasue you are there to buy something in person.

13. The response of one of the managers was I have to go home and have to use my computer to order the camera online.

ANSWER: NO SUCK THING AS A COMPUTER THAT IS SETUP INSIDE A LOCAL TARGET STORE TO ORDER ONLINE.

14. I asked why can't I use the computer in front of the store ?

FOR EMPLOYEES ONLY.

15. Answer was , The server is down so they have to turn the computer off.

AGAIN for employees only and maybe it was broken.

.........

Most likely a language communication problem 99.99% I bet that is what it was/is. I had language problems before with other who don't speak english in some of these local liquor stores where I live.

Target.com Price policies

AUTHOR: Tabatha - (U.S.A.)

Directly from Target.com

"Target.com Pricing Information
Price Matching and Volume Discounts
Prices on Target.com may vary from Target stores and from the Target Weekly Ad. Products and prices for Target stores vary slightly from region to region, and occasionally, between the stores and the Web site. We are unable to change this pricing."

The computer in store you are talking about is the same thing if you go home and do a search on Target.com. Sometimes the prices are the same in the stores - and sometimes they are drastically different. It would be nice to know what camera you are talking about so we can help you out - but you have ignored that request.

I do agree that they employees that helped you obviously didn't know why the price was different. Instead of being smart and asking someone who did - they gave you false information. I'm sure it had nothing to do with race, and that's a huge shame on you for playing the race card. Target has a wide variety of people working for them.

Race card

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

The race cardis played so often anymore, the only ones who care are the media. No, race had nothign to do with this, idiotic store employees maybe. But not race. As far as Wendy comparing Adolphs logical and reasoned comments to Adolph Hitler, it shows the knee jerk reaction whenever a white person tries to discuss their feelings toward race in this country. What was racist about his comment? It's a valid point. When the white population becomes a minority in this country, will it be ok for me to complain about not getting a job because of "The Man"? how fast will Affirmative Action be repealed when there are suddenly quotas for hiring white people? Why is it that there is always outrage if a store doesn't want to hire the next Tamiqua or Shaquonda, but there is nowhites working at FUBU?

For Adolph - regarding your comments

AUTHOR: Wanda - (U.S.A.)

This post is off-subject as far as the problems with Target stores goes but I feel compelled to comment on your diatribe about the "white" race and folks "playing the race card"...

I am white/anglo with an Irish/American Indian (primarily Amer. Indian) heritage. I also have 2 beautiful, bright Asian grandchildren so I guess I am as qualified as any non-Asian to comment on THIS particular "race" issue. I have seen my grandchildren teased, insulted and outright abused by both children & adults based solely on someone else's perception of "Asians". Both these children are as American as I - 1 was born in Colorado and the other at an Army hospital in Korea (while my son was stationed there on active military duty). If you think racism isn't alive & thriving then you are deluding yourself.

However, my primary reason for commenting on your post is that your words are so resoundingly similar to the rantings of another ADOLF who was also concerned with the welfare of "white/anglo" citizens ......scary isn't it ????

"Race card" question........

AUTHOR: Adolph - (U.S.A.)

The so called "race card" is frequently played by current minority races, black, asian, hispainc, claiming some kind of problem created or exacerbated by their race.
.
The white/anglo race is destined to become a minority in the United States by current population trends. Will the "race card" issue be able to used with equal legitimacy (by whites) when that occurs?
.
On the face of the entire planet, the white race IS the minority.

Freight is calculated FOB

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Freight is calculated FOB (freight on board ) from the place of origin. Shipping an item from the furthest point in America say NY to LA would be about $10.00 CWT. Thats $10.00 per hundred weight. That must be a very heavy camera.

Most Asian goods deliver into the United states (Camera-asain) FOB San Diego or pointof entry into the United States. That is, they are priced for sale from the point of entry to the States, and the companies mark them up from that point.

For all the slow people out there - there is no way in hell the shipping and handling of the camera was $200. It is more like $2.00.

For all the MULTI-DEGREED people out there, read a book about diversity, and stop trying to make this man out to be uneducated. What would all your degrees be worth to you in Somalia? Bangladesh? Iraq? Spain? He is from another country making his way over here, learning a new culture, language etc.

Online prices vs Store prices the store gave you a BS answer

AUTHOR: Chris - (U.S.A.)

Sound to me like the person you spoke with at the store gave you a BS answer to get the sale there. I know many stores that deal in electronics have special pricing online because of the increased competition online so these prices are not honored at the store. As to whether or not there was any racism or not, I don't know. But if that is the way they made you feel then let the store or district manager know how they made you feel. Just be civil and don't yell, if they shrug it off then go somewhere else and update your report here.

#8 Consumer Suggestion

My experience with Online versus In-Store sales (from a retail perspective).

AUTHOR: Darryl - (U.S.A.)

I have noticed in a lot of cases that most disputes arising in retail are due to miscommunication and/or lack of Knowledge. I have actually witnessed my boss not being totally truthful with the situation with the costumer (or himself) for fear of accepting any fault do to his incompetents or though store mismanagement. I think it is a mental condition arising from not being able to humble oneself to admitting they are imperfect. Rather than admitting their lack of knowledge, they just subconsciously blame someone or something else for the mistake rather than trying to correct the problem for the costumers.

In your case, I believe the reason that the employees had refused you request to purchase online at the store was for several reasons (this of course is assuming that he was just ignorant of the real problem):

First, I have seen computer glitches on our computers (yes I work in retail but at another major electronics dealer); where costumers have ordered online from the in-store kiosks and there was no way to print their confirmation page or receipt. I know that it is because of a security issue within the corporate network when making transactions over a secure webpage. Their internet security is set up like this for two reasons: to help protect the corporate network from hackers and viruses, and to discourage employees from using the internet for their personal use. This was explained to me, when I took the time to actually admit to myself that this was a major flaw in customer service due to my ignorance, and that I should contact the corporate office for an explanation. Sometimes a problem arises when someone tires to print, other times when you go to a secure think the familiar white page shows up saying, could not connect to the server. It all has to due with size of the packet of information sent over the network. If the printer is not connect directly to the computer, but rather controlled by a network, the security protocol stops it from being transmitted to the printer because it fears it is malicious software. From then on, I didn't outright refuse a customer the right to buy things online at the store--I just told them that there would be no way to print out a receipt until they got home and checked their email. Now I will admit that this is a major flaw as far as customer service goes, but usually when I tell the customer this they agree that it would be best to go home and to complete the transaction there. Considering how complicated the reason is, I can see how the manager might just make up some lame excuse out of laziness or just really not know. Just realize that this a corporate issue totally out of his hands. There is nothing he can do to help you even if he was ignorant of the situation.

Second, I would be hesitant to literally take your credit card and manually "Assist you" in ordering online. I believe it is against the law to use someone else's credit card information to fill out an order form. One could come back and say, "I didn't order that" and would essentially be correct. It is especially dangerous online because there is nothing for you to sign. I want to be believed the consumer would be honest, but I would feel uncomfortable doing that. Although I would be happy to help you in any questions you may have with the process, I am not going to fill in the information for you.

Now, in your defense--I don't believe that the shipping could have been 200 dollars, and while I don't want to call anyone a liar, we can at least say that this was not a correct Figure. Second, the fact that his server is down, it is a situation that needed to be resolved right away. How are the credit card applications, registers, western unions, and other operations being performed in the store if the server is down. This is another lazy lame excuse. He could have requested for you to wait, while he reset the Manager's bridge (or whatever computer in the store is serving at the network hub) to try to correct the problem.

So I think that most of problem here is miscommunication and/or lack of Knowledge. In your situation I would have found a way to get on the internet to show you the disclaimer about the web pricing (most of the time just rebooting the computer in the kiosk works). If there was a store pickup, I would have offered you a chance to order online at the store--explaining that I could not promise you that you would be able to print out a receipt. Also, sometimes it can take up to an hour for your order to be processed and show up on our computers. If all these options were unsuitable, I would have asked you why you chose this particular product and tried to find a replacement, in store, that would give you the same options for a similar price.

So I believe your complaint is just bad customer service and incompetence rather than fraud or "Rip-off". Unfortunately, not everyone is as competent as others.

this whole issue may have involved some miscommunication

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

Hernan,

One thing you have not yet provided. What was the make and model camera you wished to purchase? I went to the Target website and found several digital cameras both for $199 and $399, so I do not know which one you had the print out for.

I find it difficult to believe that if someone ordered a $199 camera from the Target website, the final cost would be $399 after S&H. That is a high amount, even if it was a PC that was being ordered. S&H can't be any more than $20-$30. So after tax and all, we're looking at maybe $250 total at the most. Give us the model, and I will put it to the test.

I think this whole issue may have involved some miscommunication, and possibly a pricing error on their website. One other thing I can think of is maybe the camera in the store was similar to the one on the web, but had more features, therefore making it higher in price. It's an easy mistake to make. Are you sure it was the exact same model?

Oh, and I looked all over the Target website. Nowhere did I see any statement that the prices listed were valid on the web only. If I found a camera for $199 on the web, I would expect that if I went to the closest store, it would be the same price, or at least very close.

Something is not right.

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

OK, first, let's all get on the same page here. From the way I read the initial post by Hernan, he went to Target, got on the computer they have in the store to look up and order merchandise. He was looking for a digital camera, and found one listed for $199. The price of the same model camera in the store is $399, and the only explanation he said the Target employees gave was that S&H is $200, making the total web price $399 to match the store price. He's not trying to buy a computer.

Hernan, is this all correct so far? Good. Now, please help us all out by providing the make and model of the camera so that we can go on the Target website and look it up.

Cory and Stacey, normally I agree with most of what you post on ROR, but in this case, I think you misunderstood the original complaint. Due to the fact that Hernan is Asian, and English probably is not his 1st language, I can understand the confusion.

Joe, what can I say man. It seems most of your posts are negative, and you have a tendency to name call. Unless you have something constructive to add to a report, it's best you don't say anything at all. Don't get me wrong, I will be one of the first to call "Bullshit" on a report when needed (look at all the reports under the category of "Bigots" and you will see what I mean), but it seems all you want to do is degrade people and call them names.

One thing I will say about the responses so far is I also agree that race probably was not a factor here, except that it may have contributed to the confusion at the store (because of language skills only). Hernan, I would hesitate playing the race card unless you know for a fact that you were being discriminated against because of you are Asian.

Please provide the information I've asked for so that we can try to assist. Thanks.

Shipping AND Handling costs The cost to get the computer to the customer is huge

AUTHOR: D - (U.S.A.)

I don't know what brand of computer they were selling, but lets say it was a DELL. $200.00 could be about right. The cost to get the computer to the customer is huge. First they have to pay all the people involved with processing the orders to get the computer to you.

The people at DELL, which includes the people who puts the order in, the people who have to get the computers to the trucks, the cost of the trucks the people who load the trucks, the people who drive the trucks, the insurance for the trucks, cost of the gas, and a lot more things that I'm missing. And thats BEFORE Target gets the computer.

And then Target has the cost of the guys to unload the truck, the cost of storage, the cost of running the store, the guys to put the computer on the sales floor, the guy to answer STUPID questions of people, and of course the cashier to ring up the computer.

So, all of that for $200.00? I think that is a bargan. And I won't say anything about you being Asian. And NO I DON'T work for Target.

Don't care what race...you are not bright

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

Obviously, you want to play your "race" card here to complain...and are free to do so.

Fact is, my wife is Asian and I shop Target all the time...never any problem in ANY Target here or anywhere else in the US I've shopped. The fact is this is a NATIONAL FORUM and Target is a National Company....who's internet is accessable to me, Texas and NY.

That you can't read English is nobody's fault but your own. Unlike some countries, we reserve the right to price things as we see fit...and if that means differently on the internet than in a store...that's within their right (and common sense) to do that. It's cheaper for them to sell it there than in a store where they have to deal with idiots who complain about stupid things all the time.

Read the policy on damned near any website that sells stuff like this....at a discount. Their biggest thing they say is it's cheaper because they don't have overhead like a huge box store to heat, cool, and pay employees, turn on lights, ship via a truck that uses gas...and all that good stuff.

Go to Best Buy...or CompUSA or Circuit City and you will find "internet only" pricing. Are you really that naive or do you just enjoy expressing your free speach?

Quit playing your race card...it is not called for here and not the problem. Nobody gives a d**n what race you are and your money is as good as anyone else's money. I speak from personal experience and am offended by people who falsely claim race is the issue. I've seen real racism and job discrimination against my wife and what you are complaining about is nowhere near reality...just bad judgment and inability to read disclaimers on your part.

It's obvious you exhude your intelligence every time you open your mouth...and that's what puts people off. Nobody likes to deal with someone who doesn't make sense.

Cory,
Why is it that someone from texas is answering in regards to this issue ? were you there ? Who's the dummy now ?

The thing that i have an issue with, is the excuse that the reason why the item was priced at $199 is because when you add the shipping and handling, it would total to $399 as what the price is inside the store. Would you believe that shipping and handling would be $200.00 ? I have a print out of the product in question and it does not say anything about prices good on the internet only. YOU were not there and you don't know what happened, again, who's the dummy now ? I know 2 people working for TARGET who does not know how to answer questions, I think I found the third one.

Drop Ship why prices on the internet are cheaper

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

One reason why prices on the internet are cheaper is because Target gets the mfg to drop ship the item directly to you. If you're standing in a Target, all those things involved in running that Target including the two manager's listening to your stupid questions cost money. That's a first. Going to a store web site, at the store, printing the web price AT THE STORE and then walking over to the counter and asking them to honor the web price, AT THE STORE. What a new and novel approach. If you bothered to look, I sure there is a disclaimer about INTERNET PRICE good ON THE INTERNET ONLY. I'm sure there was no intent to offend you because of your race. They would have done the same to a white dummy.
