We have never had a check returned from our financial institution due to insufficient funds. In fact we have quite a bit of money deposited with them. While attempting to write a check at a business we do quite a lot of business with, Telecheck refused to approve our check. This not only took my wife and myself by surprise, but also the owner of the business, When I contacted Telecheck by phone, they first hung up on me even though I wasn't rude.
The second time I finally got through they gave me some mumble jumble about their policy and that in my case I just fell within the guidelines for them to refuse to honor it. A bunch of crap if you ask me. Isn't it against the law to refuse legal tender under these circumstances?

First off, checks aren't legal tender. Cash is. Secondly, you might be a victim of ID theft. My brother, who's worth millons, goes into a local grocery store and his check gets declined by you guessed it, telecheck. Come to find out his ID was stolen by a gang out of Houston. They passed a bunch of NSF checks using his ID. It took a year and thousands of dollars in legal fees to get it straightened out. You might pull your credit report to check what activity is taking place. telecheck sucks. Several companies I've worked for have used their services and they can be trouble. In their defense, 99% of their "clients do write hot checks but that leaves 1% that doesn't and they treat everybody like crap.

I don't think a check can be concidered the same. Not all businesses accept checks as a form of payment.
A check is a demand draft against your account that can be refused for any number of reasons. And not only by Telechex.
