I received an AT&T phone bill dated 7-19-09. Page one of the bill had a 'Consumer Alter' for a new service provider. There was a charge for $21.30 (total including taxes) third party billing charge billed for something I never subscribed to (music downloads and ringtones).

I contacted AT&T and they referred me to The Billing Resource that was listed as the third party billing service. The Billing Resource referred me to the Service Department of Brilliant Digital Entertainment (866-587-3942) Fax 506-852-9510. They said that a Gregg Watson used the last four digits of my social security number to authorize the charge. Fearing that my identity has been stolen I reported it to the police, the attorney generals office and the Public utility commission.

I will be getting a credit, but the bigger issue is who is out there making money on this scam. AT&T put a block on my account so it can't happen again, but because the amount is so incidental I fear that most people won't even notice the additional charge on their account.

I have read other reports on line so this seems to be a reoccurring issue.
